Best "For Sale" site? Best Threads?

I was thinking about this today while searching for some information.

I make my living in IT and I've been on the 'net since before Al Gore invented it. Heck, since before there was even a World Wide Web.


So this isn't my first Web Forum and I know how annoying it is to see the same questions over and over again, usually from people who seem to be unaware of the development of something called a "search button".

Of course, the flip side of that coin is a lesser version of the basic problem with the Web, which is; Trying to get information from the internet is like trying to get a drink of water from a fire hydrant.


So I'm wondering...

Can anyone suggest:

1. The best "Boat for Sale" websites, and;
2. The threads that really should be mandatory reading, because they were THAT GOOD.

A frequent- (posts for boat buying) - TF poster/member is Galaxy Girl. Contact her privately about the best sites, she knows them all.

The threads that really should be mandatory reading, because they were THAT GOOD.

There are so many aspects to boating that >best< is impossible.

There are folks that like to build , repair , operate or simply live on , aground in their coffee grounds.

What you like is ???

Since no one else mentioned it yet... you may find yachtworld.com useful.

And maybe eventually craigslist, too, but that's probably more useful once you know more about what kind of boat you may be after.

Yachtworld is by far the top of the list.

If you are looking to buy a boat or get information about boats to buy YachtWorld is the best. if you are looking to sell a boat YachtWorld is the best, but only brokers (who pay large amounts of money to Yacht World ) can place boats on the site. Craig's list is free and good for local boat buyers for lower price boats, Boat US has a decent classified section.

Folks looking for a low priced ;fixer up er; need not bother brokers , they have almost nothing for you.

Craigs list can be searched nationwide , not just in your local area.

This is good if you need a cheap boat that needs work, something no broker will touch.

The BEST way to find a low priced boat that might only need a bit of work is to contact boat yards and ask if there are boats that may be for sale, or soon be for sale.

As many yards are not brokers the price wont be bumped 10% or more and the illness or death of a customer might help the yard provide one more service to an old friend.

Our phone ( Verison) is $20. a month , no time or distance charges so calling a couple of hundred places would be only time .

Rent an RV in the close area , New England , and drive the shore for a week stopping to see whats available.

Sure it will take time , but the VALUE of seeing 10-200 boats will pay dividends when you finally put cash on the table. Use your vacation to invest in obtaining some knowledge!

I found two of my small boats doing Google searches. Google shows the different sources, location and the boat in question.

YW is best for seeing all the models available for sale, Boattrader mirrors YW and once in a great while will have one NOT on YW, not often though. And all the fixer uppers are on CL and some are also listed on YW. It's been a while since I saw a "new" listing. I eventually recognize the fact that "Hey, I've seen this boat before!" I googled the latest apple of my eye, a Mainship 34 and found an awesome blog of a guy totally refurbishing one (repowered, new tanks, re-cored deck and bridge, new interior, $$$$) and it turns out he is less then a mile from my house! How's that for "World Wide" web!

Couldn't agree more Fred. Forums and Yachtworld/Craigslist are great tools for research and gaining some knowledge but are a poor substitute for getting out there and kicking hulls. I learned something from every seller talked with and every boat looked at. So much so that when we found "the boat" we didn't flinch, some folks will suffer paralysis from analysis.

Most Aussies will be familiar with boatpoint.com.au and yachthub.com.au.
The latter has NZ listings too. Both accept both broker and private ads. They also provide good boat porn, eg. look at Palm Beach brand boats. I think our US friends would be surprised at our higher pricing generally.

If you think you know what manufacturer of boat you want, many have owner / fan groups on the web. Lots of boat go for sale on these sites. Going to look at one next week that was only listed on one of these sites.

If your looking for a boat to do the Loop with they have a great classified section full of boats that have been around once or twice. AGLCA

I hope for your sake that you can make friends with a couple of really experienced pleasure boaters in your area who know boats and cruising long distances... I mean decades experienced... and, NOT just "dock sitters". Would be well worth your while to get chummy with some "old salts" by buying em a few meals and offering to put a hundred $$ in their boat tanks for a ride or two. Experience and chats with thems dat know can be priceless when entering a field to which you are little experienced. Understand that of all the "fairly" knowledgeable boaters on any thread - NONE - are in their first couple years of boating... most have decade minimum and many have several decades of marine training. Some hold high degrees and extensive education background. You want to get into the "boating world" - get ready to spend a lot of time learning, listening, experiencing, and studying. Your learning curve is bout straight up currently. Boating is not necessarily easy. But, it is simply one of the greatest ways to experience life! - IMHO!
