Thanks for that.
Whats with the boat brokers? I am on Orcas Island this Saturday and wrote to a broker about a boat I want to see. I wrote the broker a note asking a question, cricketts.

I wrote another broker a question about another boat in Anacortes. Nothing, no response.

Odd at least.

I am still a tire kicker until I solve the headroom issue, but why ignore my first emails?

I just measured the ceiling height for the Great Harbour 47 - some places are 83" Saloon, Galley, Master Berth. The passageway between the galley and the master berth is only 76".

Canada is not just land

If you are in Canadian water, you generally are in Canada. This is definitely true if you anchor. All the regulations on hand guns apply - It is a criminal offense not just a citation. Same goes for some porno - particularly kiddie porn or violent porn - criminal not just naughty.

The height issue - the mattress size can be changed or extended easily but you will not find a lot of sedan height selection that makes you happy. It is hard to raise the top on most models but sometimes you could lower the centre aisle at from the floor. You lose some space in the engine room or cockpit but maybe still a decent trade.

The wine issue. Try making some on board. In 15 days with a little skill grape juice concentrate equals wine. I do and it works well. It is also 90% cheaper than the expensive alcohol prices in Canada.

I think a 35 footer is too small for continuous travel. Try something bigger and the possibility of more headroom could more likely be there.

$300,000 seems way too high for a boat unless you are incredibly fussy. Try around a $100,000 for a decent used vessel and although some people are much lower and some much higher, count on maybe $3000 a month to run I am lower on both the capital and operational cost and I would say we live pretty well.

Try four months solid off in the summer with no return to home before committing to full time or winter. I do this and find it quite acceptable.

Lastly - the mail- I have someone come by once a week and gather it up and turf it into a big cardboard box reading none of it. I know which recurring bills to pay so I stop at a branch of my bank once a month and pay roughly what I think as I can always phone for an accurate amount. My only beef is Hydro estimated readings which always rip me off. Next year I am going to phone in some fake readings . If they can cheat, so can I .

Thanks

For the response.

Thanks for all of that. The 300K would include travel and lodging to a potential boat, haul out, inspection etc.
I do not do any porn, have a great and wonderful wife....
I will not give up my other hobby so Canada will have to due without my money.
Alaska seems to still be a free state, so we can hobby up there as well as Washington state.
Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.
Now if these two brokers will write back...

Big Jim - Here is a link to The Essentials of Living Aboard A Boat - Mark Nicholas I just finished it, and I highly recommend it, as our situations sound similar, though at this point my steps into this journey are few. The wife and I are in the "immersion" stage.

I too have wondered on the gun issue, as I refuse to disarm, Thanks for bringing this up, and thanks to all who have supplied info.

BTW, Nordhavn no longer offers the 35, but now and then you can find one on brokerage or classified sites, but as stated earlier in this thread, I don't think fuel capacity is there for circumnavigation, and I think at best, it's limited to coastal cruising, maybe even island-hopping. We are looking at the N40, which is fully capable.

Good luck to you and your wife, and please keep us posted!

Keep studying, Rafter. The N35 was never meant as a passagemaker. In fact, I think that is the only Nordhavn that was not. It is strongly powered with a semi-planing hull.

Roger that, Baker, and, thanks for the "Surveyor's Antennae" tale...it was a good 'un.

The Orcas was a blast!

We stayed in a housekeeping cabin with my Sailor son. We went on a ....wait for it............three hour cruise... around the island chasing Orcas at 18 knots.

I was astounded at how much liquor costs in WA state. I paid $54 for a 1.75 Liter bottle of Johnny Walker Red that I can purchase in CA for $18.
I don't smoke but noticed a pack of Marlboros at Safeway was $9.50. YIKES. Maybe we will move to Oregon instead.

2004 Northern Marine Raised Pilothouse LRC Power Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

The wife and I walked the marina at Anacortes and found several boats in the 44-50 foot range and in our price range. Sadly they were all very short in the headroom department. We toured them with the broker.

Link pasted weird?
We saw Timberwolf, a gorgeous 60 foot Northern Marine Pilothouse Trawler. Lets just say I dreampt I won the lottery and she was mine.
I just need $800K or so more money and she is mine.
