Boat in a tub

For the benefit of you west coast gals and guys. Here is the Peterborough lock on the Trent Severn Waterway.

Boat lifts in Europe.

Wow.That is some great engineering, both old and new.

I would love to take a boat through some of those locks.

Well, I can vouch for the fact it is fun, Andy, although we did not traverse these particular ones.
The first one is the Falkirk Wheel, in Scotland, and I think the second lot are what is called the Bingley Five.
The others I am not familiar with - Bet Marin knows...
The Falkirk wheel is like its name implies, the boats float into the huge bucket, and it then rotates the whole shebang up and over, as the other one comes down, where the bottom one is then able to float out - all powered by shifting the water load I believe. A bit like the Lynton - Lynmoth cable rail, but much larger scale...

The Bingley Five is just a series of orthodox locks, but are the steepest in the UK, I think. I'd like to hear more about the others.

I'll be doing the lock thing in about 2 -3 weeks. Taking a "new" old boat from Ny to Lake Erie Via St Lawrence seaway, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Lots of work before she will be ready for sea.

Bay Pelican it looks to me like the last picture # 8 is taken straight down from the top of the structure in pic #7, the boats are in a rectangular "tub" the tub is lifted by cables like an overhead crane would to the top of the structure in the previous pic. it looks like some big drawwork pulleys can be seen in pic 7 then gates open the boat float out into an aqueduct/canal which is horizontal to the stone wall in the background where the canal must carry on. Picture 7 looks like a waterslide but I believe it must be water level along the top. My guess is there are two tubs one to act as counteweight fo the other one going up as the other goes down.
