1. Myers Chuck straight across Clarence Strait from Thorne Bay.

2. Small cove in Thorne bay. Behind me was property and a cabin I wanted to buy. Never came together on the price.

3. Small unnamed island at the west end of Karheen Passage near Garden Island.

Eric, the Admiral and I just got back from a 2 week cruise and train trip with Royal Caribbean in Alaska. I would love to cruise in my own boat or a charter. Alaska gives adventure a whole new meaning. I have thousands of pictures of the coast and a few of the marinas.

One of Ketchikan's several marinas/harbors with two of several cruise ships in view:

In Ketchikan, float planes are as thick as mosquitoes.

Are you getting homesick for Alaska, Eric?

Can you feel it in your bones that the salmon are starting to arrive? Can you see in your minds eye seagulls flying inland to the spawning beds? Can you sense the days getting shorter and the nights getting longer and darker? Are you inexorably being pulled north for the spectacular fall and winter by some mysterious reverse migratory force?

Just kidding, sorry about the hijack but just couldn't resist it.

I'd love to spend a couple hours going through your computers hard drive Eric. Always enjoy your, and other members, photos.

As advertised ... Beaches in Alaska.

1. Taken by a friend "Slide Creek" near Sandy Beach north of Thorne Bay.

2. The beach by the old clan house at Kasaan (POW).

3. Downtown Kake north of Rocky Pass.

Seems Eric is still in love with his X, and how could he not be. Definitely a special place on this earth. Eric's brother knew a thing or two about Alaska as well.

Alaska and boats

Do you remember those guys that make you sit through vacation slide shows:whistling:

Dave is that bottom pic of Skagway?

freshalaska what you mean brother?

1. In a small cove on Thorne Bay where we were looking at a cabin and several acres. The boat is my 18' Clipper McKenzie square stern freight canoe. Almost always run it w OB. With a 6 0r 8 hp OB can go twice as fast as Willy. Wind in the face canoeing. And a 1500lb capacity. Note the spray rail .. that I mounted too high.

2. On the beach of an unnamed Island w Garden Is across the water. In Sea Otter Sound. The extremely high concentration of clam shells indicate that this is an old village site but the high concentration of Sea Otters here (in Sea Otter Sound) means the Sea Otters have been here for thousands of years so it's probably a mix of both. Marin points out that the propper name for these old village sites is Midden.

3. At Klawock. The first cannery in Alaska. Was built not this century or the last but the century before that.

1. An islet in the NE corner of Shakan Bay on NW Prince of Wales Is. In some places there are white sand beaches along the north coast. There are some on the east side of Camano Sound no of Prince Rupert. Probably elsewhere too.

2. My favorite trailer boat launch .. Staney Creek.

3. Landing on what we call picnic island W Karheen Passage and east Sea Otter Sound. This could be one of those Middens but I think the clam shells here are mostly or all from Sea Otter activity. In this area one can see 10 or 15 of them together at times.STH71193.jpg

Alaska looks beautiful, and I would love to go there on a boat some day, but y'all have some twisted ideas as to what constitutes a beach.

Dougcole,
Alaska has some beautiful and interesting beaches. Some are straight up and down w no sand. Others are piled high w logs. Many are rocks and seaweed .. mostly kelp. A few even have sand.
I thought many of you that are accustomed to more typical beaches would like a tour of this interesting place.

Here's one a friend took.

Eric, I like the pics a lot. Great scenery, mostly unspoilt by man. Even if not what I normally call a beach, complete with sun, sand, surf, and melanoma seekers.
Keep `em coming.

What I meant Eric is that "you can take the man out of the bush but you can't take the bush out of the man". Follow?

I'd rather not talk about SP.

Freshalaska some Alaska lasses I call bush girls. Are you accusing me of being a bush boy? Could be worse. It's true I can't relate to some of the things people do down here. Like follow close in cars .. very close at 60+ mph. And then pass up many wonderful opportunities to pass. People will just about knock you down while walking around sidewalks and in stores. They pretend they don't see you and bull right through. Les Swaub tells me my car is ready but it's not at all and it's obvious they know it. Bought a used car from what looked like a very upright dealer. $8K car w a $2000 problem. Only shows itself starting cold so they probably start it every morning. I had it checked out w my mechanic but did'nt keep the car overnight. They got me and probably they got got buy the people that traded it in.

In Anchorage it's like that too but not in the smaller places. So I guess there's enough bush in me to notice that stuff.

1. My friend Shane took this one near Thorne Bay.

2. Calder Bay. 20 to 30' deep over a wide area and could anchor at a 10-1 scope. Very unusual in SE so I let out about 10-1 and set it good. Felt like I was ready for a gale (forcast was for 30 knot winds) but not much wind came. When I pulled anchor up came the ugliest big ball of black and super stinky mud. Took me 20 min to get it off and my hands smelled of that mud for over a week.

3. In the upper end of Duncan Canal not far west from Petersburg.

Eric, wasn't your brother or was it father, that was editor of Alaska Magazine ( Alaska Sportsman) for many years?

Father
Indeed he was .. Robert A Henning

He and Dale DeArmond bought the magazine in 1953. Changed the name (and the magazine to fit) not long after but continued the hunting and fishing element and it prevails today.

Dad formed Alaska NW Publishing and that spawned the Milepost, Alaska Journal, Alaska Geographic and much else.

He's gone now but now and then I'll say to my self "I'll have to ask dad about that". Still miss Mom and Dad.

The first two pictures were taken by a friend. The first is as taken and the second I played around with on the computer with "tools". I thought it was interesting and a bit dramatic so it's time to share.

3. The town of Kasaan south of Thorne Bay.

4. Just north of Kasaan. The oldest Clan House in the world is in those trees above the beach.

Nice photos Eric. Love the multi colored kelp shots. Kind of planning a trip to SE in a couple of years as we acclimate to our new boat and outfit her. Spent the last 20 days bumping around the Gulf Islands in our Willard. Great weather and scenery.

Thanks Keith. The GB will be an excellent platform to spend time in SE with.

Tonight's photos.

1. Here's one of the best beaches in SE. Sandy Beach. It's about 8 miles north on Thorne Bay on Clarence Strait. Sandy beaches like this are so few that when the sun comes out they get quite popular. We had the distinction of living closer to Sandy Beach than anyone else as we were the last house on SB road.

2. A volcanic rock formation high up in Duncan Canal near Petersburg.

3. Near Snug Harbor not far from Thorne Bay. My kayak w friend paddling.

1. In Tonowek Narrows north of Craig there is a wooden crib sorta falling down that contains Chief Tonowek's remains. Plenty of water there when I went through (and 2 knots of current) so I took this shot out of the wheelhouse window. Notice the wooden warrior standing guard over the Chief.

2. This is the Floatel in the South arm of Thorne Bay. Jim and Jeanie McFarland have been running a lodge there since about 1980 .. give or take. We would frequently have Christmas dinner there .. ice permitting.

3. One of Shane VanOrden's pictures pictures I believe of Kasaan Bay.
