MSG poisoning

MSG hides behind 25 or more names, such as Natural Flavouring.' MSG is even in your favorite coffee from Tim Horton's and Starbucks coffee shops!

I wondered if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive obesity epidemic, and so did a friend of mine, John Erb.

He was a research assistant at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada , and spent years working for the government. He made an amazing discovery while going through scientific journals for a book he was writing called The Slow Poisoning of America.

In hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were creating obese mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies. No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so scientists have to create them. They make these creatures morbidly obese by injecting them with
MSG when they are first born.

The MSG triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates, causing rats (and perhaps humans) to become obese. They even have a name for the fat rodents they create: 'MSG-Treated Rats.'

When I heard this, I was shocked. I went into my kitchen and checked the cupboards and the refrigerator. MSG was in everything -- the Campbell 's soups, the Hostess Doritos, the Lays flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals, and Kraft salad dressings,
especially the 'healthy low-fat' ones.

The items that didn't have MSG marked on the product label had something called ‘Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein,’ which is just another name for Monosodium Glutamate.

It was shocking to see just how many of the foods we feed our children everyday are filled with this stuff. MSG is hidden under many different names in order to fool those who read the ingredient list, so that they don't catch on. (Other names for MSG are
'Accent, 'Aginomoto,' 'Natural Meat Tenderizer,' etc.)

But it didn't stop there.

When our family went out to eat, we started asking at the restaurants what menu items contained MSG. Many employees, even the managers, swore they didn't use MSG.

But when we ask for the ingredient list, which they grudgingly provided, sure enough, MSG and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein were everywhere.

Burger King, McDonald's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, every restaurant -- even the sit-down eateries like TGIF, Chili's, Applebee's, and Denny's -- use MSG in abundance. Kentucky Fried Chicken seemed to be the WORST offender :

MSG was in every chicken dish, salad dressing and gravy. No wonder I loved to eat that coating on the skin -- their secret spice was MSG!

So why is MSG in so many of the foods we eat? Is it a preservative, or a vitamin?

Not according to my friend John Erb. In his book The Slow Poisoning of America, he said that MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it has on the human body.

Even the propaganda website sponsored by the food manufacturers lobby group supporting MSG explains that the reason they add it to food is to make people eat more.

A study of the elderly showed that older people eat more of the foods that it is added to. The Glutamate Association lobbying group says eating more is a benefit to the elderly, but what does it do to the rest of us?

'Betcha can't eat [just] one,' takes on a whole new meaning where MSG is concerned! And we wonder why the nation is overweight!

MSG manufacturers themselves admit that it addicts people to their products. It makes people choose their product over others, and makes people eat more of it than they would if MSG wasn't added.

Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an addictive substance. Since its introduction into the American food supply fifty years ago, MSG has been added in larger and larger doses to the pre-packaged meals, soups, snacks, and fast foods we are tempted to eat everyday.

The FDA has set no limits on how much of it can be added to food. They claim it's safe to eat in any amount. But how can they claim it's safe when there are hundreds of scientific studies with titles like these:

'The monosodium glutamate (MSG) obese rat as a model for the study of exercise in obesity.' Gobatto CA, Mello MA, Souza CT, Ribeiro IA. Res Commun Mol Pathol Pharmacol. 2002.

'Adrenalectomy abolishes the food-induced hypothalamic serotonin release in both normal and monosodium glutamate-obese rats.' Guimaraes RB, Telles MM, Coelho VB, Mori C, Nascimento CM, Ribeiro. Brain Res Bull. 2002 Aug.

'Obesity induced by neonatal monosodium glutamate treatment in spontaneously hypertensive rats: An animal model of multiple risk factors.'
Iwase M, Yamamoto M, Iino K, Ichikawa K, Shinohara N, Yoshinari Fujishima.
Hypertens Res. 1998 Mar.

'Hypothalamic lesion induced by injection of monosodium glutamate in suckling period and subsequent development of obesity.' Tanaka K, Shimada M, Nakao K Kusunoki. Exp Neurol. 1978 Oct.

No, the date of that last study was not a typo; it was published in 1978.. Both the 'medical research community' and 'food manufacturers' have known about the side effects of MSG for decades.

Many more of the studies mentioned in John Erb's book link MSG to diabetes, migraines and headaches, autism, ADHD, and even Alzheimer's.

So what can we do to stop the food manufactures from dumping this fattening and addictive MSG into our food supply and causing the obesity epidemic we now see?

Several months ago, John Erb took his book and his concerns to one of the highest government health officials in Canada While he was sitting in the government office,
the official told him, 'Sure, I know how bad MSG is. I wouldn't touch the stuff.' But this
top-level government official refuses to tell the public what he knows.

The big media doesn't want to tell the public either, fearing issues with their advertisers. It seems that the fallout on the fast food industry may hurt their profit margin. The food producers and restaurants have been addicting us to their products for years, and now we are paying the price for it. Our children should not be cursed with obesity caused by an addictive food additive.

But what can I do about it? I'm just one voice! What can I do to stop the poisoning of our children, while our governments are insuring financial protection for the industry that is poisoning us?

This message is going out to everyone I know in an attempt to tell you the truth that the corporate-owned politicians and media won't tell you.

The best way you can help to save yourself and your children from this drug-induced epidemic is to forward this article to everyone. With any luck, it will circle the globe before politicians can pass the legislation protecting those who are poisoning us.

The food industry learned a lot from the tobacco industry. Imagine if big tobacco had a bill like this in place before someone blew the whistle on nicotine?

If you are one of the few who can still believe that MSG is good for us and you don't believe what John Erb has to say, see for yourself. Go to the National Library of Medicine at
Home - PubMed - NCBI. Type in the words 'MSG Obese' and read a few of the 115 medical studies that appear.

We the public do not want to be rats in one giant experiment, and we do not approve of food that makes us into a nation of obese, lethargic, addicted sheep, feeding the food industry's bottom line while waiting for the heart transplant, the diabetic-induced amputation, blindness, or other obesity-induced, life-threatening disorders.

It makes me sick with headaches, breathing problems & diarrhea.

I have to be extra careful what I eat and we try to stick to natural, wild caught or organic foods.

The places we can eat at have been severely limited.

I have never posted to an "off topic" before but this one really pisses me off.
First I want to thank FF for rasing the issue. My wife suffers the most painful blinding headaches and nausea with the slightest amount of MSG and the fact that the Canadian Government (or any other) ignores this very real issues pisses me off even more.

I just read that MSG is hidden in food ingredients under the heading of " natural flavoring".

This is pure BS.

Tell that to my wife as I carry her out of a restaurant or as I hold her head so she dosn't smack it on the toilet bowl

Never, never go to any chains, fast food or anyplace that doesn't offer fresh food.

I've eaten at places & have been sick for days.

We won't buy any meat, eggs or any type prepared food from the super market chains. Always buy from fresh produce & butcher shops.

It's no guarantee but seems to work pretty well for us.

My wife is allergic to it.....gets really ugly looking hives....etc...

It seems I never suffer headaches unless I have ingested MSG. When I do, it hits me very fast and acutely. I wouldn't mind it at all if MSG was completely banned. But at the very least, it should be prominently labeled to avoid any confusion or misrepresentation.

Edit: OK, occasionally, excessive amounts of alcohol also present the same symptom, but I think I know how to manage that!

What is interesting is Olestra , a fat substitute that would help with obesity was drowned with law suits when a couple of folks got the runs.

This stuff MDG is everywhere , and we as taxpayers are expected to pick up the obese medical tabs virtually forever!

It's been shown that Olestra flushes water soluble vitamins from your digestive tract while creating a diarrhea condition in many people due to your bodies inability to break down its molecules.

Fat is a necessary component in brain development and function.

All these children drinking government, no fat milk is creating a bunch of stupid people in this country. Dumb people are easier to control.

If this is true (and I've seen nothing to refute it) then it's an outrage. It seems to me that honest labeling ought to be a requirement to participate in a free market, so customers can make informed choices. Sadly, that would require (1) regulation, and (2) a government with the will and resources to enforce it. At this point we seem to have neither of those things.

Not sure government is the answer. If you search "Beef definition" on the USDA website you get 1,160 references. Up here in Canada our Government has some very curious and different definitions of "beef", "all beef", "100% beef", and "pure beef".

to your bodies inability to break down its molecules.

That is the reason and purpose of Olestra.

High fat foods like ice cream could be eaten in vast, stuff your face, quantities with out a weight gain.

5 lbs of french fries , no problem.

What the body cant break down wont make you fat.

My first time even going into the off topic MSG is poison.

MY wife works at a integrative health clinic that tries to treat health with a diet, it is amazing how few people know how bad MSG is for us.

I am not a chain restaurant person but all the applebees have allergy menus.

I will stay off the soap box and not list the many things that MSG can and will do to your body

Please elaborate.

I'm calling bullshit on this one. MSG is made from seaweed, and there are plenty of trials that show it has no ill effects. Umami.

Boat Poker I am with you but with us it is the other way around

What ever gave you that idea? None of us should ever eat ice cream, pizza deep fried stuff or any other high fat foods except perhaps fish. Beefsteak and most other meats should be eaten in small quantities. The meat on your plate should be the smallest portion there. There should always be more vegetables than meat and chicken should never have the skin on it. After not eating ice cream for years I ate some last week and feel stupid. Chocolate and coffee .... what good is it? Yum .. that's all. I don't adhere to all of the above but I don't EVER add salt to food.

FF if you eat a lot of animal fat and/or sugar you're going to get fat unless your DNA is extremely against it. But most of us will get fat. Look at Bushie. He worked out and exercised but his system is full of fat cause he probably ate a lot of Texas beef. You are what you eat has a lot of validity.

Thanks for the excellent post though Fred. But the fact that we are fat has many causes but it's mostly from eating too much fat and sugar. They feed us much fat, sugar, meat and salt in restaurants because we like it and the probably of coming back for more is high.

I think the biggest food problem is "everybody's do'in it" syndrome. That's why most of us smoked or at least got started. Not many of us think for ourselves. Most people most all the time just do what others do.

If you actually choose what you eat w your brain you won't eat much sugar or fat .... and you won't be fat.

Msg is addictive and causes weight gain. That's why chains put it in their food they serve you and Starbucks puts it in most of their drinks.

Gotta admit I've been go'in to Starbucks a lot lately since we've come down from Alaska.

But caffeine is addictive also. It could be the coffee or the MSG or the cute girl that hands me the coffee. I should stop going there for 2 weeks and see if I have withdrawals. Next week right?

With that gun stuff going on at Starbucks today we may go elsewhere.

Saw a study the other day that compared caffeine levels of various coffees. Starbucks has one of the highest...maybe that's why it's more addictive than say, McDonalds.

Keith,
I like your side boards that hold up the roof overhang. The only ones I do like. Must be that they are at right angles (90 degrees) to the sheer and somehow visually relate to that most important line on a boat.

Nice to see a post from you.

Haha I haven't stopped going to Starbucks. I'll be there in about an hour on my way to the boat.
