Bin a long time since I have used a shear pin for an outboard.

But I got a question.

Metal to use.

Soft or hard / brittle .

For the river where props meet wood.

old 10 hp outboard.

I am thinking something a bit soft but.

?????????????????????????????

I would think soft as well but that is just an educated(questionably) guess. If I couldn't source one and had to make one from scratch, intuitively I would be inclined to turn one down from a piece of brass round stock or perhaps even aluminum on my lathe. Brass to resist the possibility of corrosion. But like I said OFB, that is only a WAG.

Hopefully someone with actual knowledge will chime in.

My old outboards with aluminum propellers always had brass sheer pins. My newer outboard 3.5hp with nylon propeller has aluminum shear pins. You can get both in many diameters at a good hobby shop.

Or in a pinch a hardware store will have machine screws in brass and possibly aluminum. Cut the head off and you have a pin.

Pop used to use the end piece of welding rod. Cheap .

Worked fine in these waters as long as you never shifted gears at above idle.

But I kinda think it work fine for the low power of a 10 hp compared to the 75 hp pop ran.

Any way thanks for the thoughts.

Had an old Johnson 18 on my john boat and when I went fishing I always carried a spare 16d nail. Worked on the James River for me.Larry
