What about insurance?

Thanks, I forgot about it. It's minimus compared to other boat expenses. So, let's add another $1500. Now we're talking 14 grand, totally. What a hobby!

$3,200 Covered Berth
$800 Insurance
$1,500+/- Fuel
$1,200 General Maintenance/Repair
$3,000 Misc. Repair/Upgrade Sinking Fund

These are the annual numbers in my budget spreadsheet. Actual numbers will vary. No debt, simple boat, simple systems, big fun.

Stored on my dock, self insured , only cost is any upgrade and expense while in operation , fuel or a rare dock.

Only cost is possible loss from not renting 50 ft of dockspace.

For fulltime liveaboard
Seasonal Dockage (Apr15-Dec15)$4000
Cruising Dockage (Dec15-Apr15) $5500 (less = more anchoring this year)
Annual haul(s) plus supplies $1000
Fuel $2500
Gen Maintenance $1000
Insurance $1200

Total $15200

Add $10,000 per year for upgrades (1st 3 years of ownership)

Property Tax on a boat??

Yes! Equal to a dirt home's property tax in California. Fortunately, the tax base/value, and thus the annual property tax of the boat, declines over time.

Great Lakes, 44 foot boat:

Heated winter storage $4000
Summer slip (May-Sept) $4000
Insurance (May-Sept) $1100 (includes hull coverage while on the hard)
Maintenance $1000 (~$15K in upgrades @ purchase)
Fuel and transient slips Variable

So, about $10K fixed costs

~24' Vashon:

Wet slip: $3084 (includes utilities)
Insurance $917
Diesel: $500
Registration: $36
Maintenance: I'm guessing it will be around $1200 (always finding something to do); I'll do my own bottom cleaning.

Total: $5737 (bottom job every 18-24 months not included).

Our 4788 Bayliner 53' OAL

Folks, thank you so much for providing this info. I'm seriously considering getting a 40 - 45' boat early next year and have been trying to understand what these annual/misc expenses might be. This is great, thanks again!

I'm not going to join this thread.

Rather not talk about it.

Didn't we have this discussion over a year ago? I searched the archives but couldn't find the thread.

Sorry if it isn't a hyperlink. Did this from my phone.

Thanks guys!

Before paying off my loan, my annual costs were $15,300 per year including fuel ($1000), maintenance ($700), slip ($5000), loan ($5850), insurance ($660), property tax ($650), and improvements ($1500-2000).

Now that the big improvements are paid for and my loan is paid off, my projected annual costs come out to about $8500 per year. That's $163 per week for the lifestyle choice. I figure if I was a golfer, I'd probably spend that much on golf. If I was a drunk, I'd probably spend more than that in a bar. I, too, used to smoke and as a reward for quitting in 2000 bought my first boat in 2001. The money I saved from smoking has gone to a good cause and I'm that much healthier because of it.

Why is most everyone's fuel costs between $1-2K? That sounds insanely low.

I burn diesel, avg 90-100 hrs cruising per year, countless hours at anchor/guest docks, $4 per gallon, under 3 gph. Those were pre-retirement cruising hours. I hope they go up significantly this year.

That sounds insanely low.

My boat is a dinghy compared to most on the forum so I don't count... 29HP at around 1/2 - 2/3 gallons per hour (6+ knots). I don't use "marine" diesel and fill up my jerry cans at the local BP. I will likely put about 100-150 hours on the boat per year based on current use.

Here, that's about 250 gallons for $1000. That's 125 hours at 2 GPH. Most of us don't operate our boats much more than that. ... Voyagers and speedsters easily spend more.

We put on between 125 & 175 hrs per yr @ $16.00 fuel cost per hour.
Used to be more hours but the cost was less.

I'm between 8,000 and 10,000 a year and have been 15,000. Boating is FUN!! :socool::smitten:
