I grew up when we all were expected to walk to school and work to make spending money. No allowance given in our family of 8 kids. I had a paper route in the Chicago suburbs from about age 12-15. Every single day, that paper was hand delivered to the front door...rain, snow, sleet or flood...and we had it all! Then when I got home, I'd get ready for my one mile walk to school.
Years later, my wife doubted my story, so while we were passing through my hometown, I reset my odometer and drove from my house to my school. I was wrong. It wasn't 1 mile, it was 1.2 miles! She never complained about me telling that story again.
(My walk was uphill just one way, but downhill was against the afternoon wind!)
Ron, your summary of modern tech costs almost mirrors mine exactly. It's a ridiculous total to contemplate. I need to rethink my priorities.
