Wanted: WANTED Onan MDJE

A friend just came over to the dark side , and wants to obtain a ONAN 7.5 kw diesel genset. that is the same as the installed one in his Bertram.

He will use it for parts , or perhaps rebuild it and keep it as a replacement.


MDJE Series -these were built around 1960' to 1980'. with a 2 cylinder diesel built by ONAN.

Prefer in Florida where it can be seen and picked up.

Tell him to check craigs list, I found one in North Carolina 12hr. trip to pick up but it was 500.00 and was a running take out. Good luck

Someone in FL must eventually be replacing their old noisemaker ,

after all its only wanted as a parts spare so time is NOT of the essence..

But I will pass on the info so far.

Just emailed the mechanic to come look at mine yesterday. Starts and runs, but shuts down when you let go of the starter switch. Hoping it is something easy, or I may be shipping part-by-part to Florida....:-(

Donny, Take your finger and hold the shut down solenoid in the run position and let it run a minute. Make sure there is oil in it.... There is a safety that when it gets under a certain rpm is will shut down. The little gizmo sticks sometimes if you don't run it very often it will gum up. When mine does that I run it for about a minute buy holding the said solenoid for about 30 seconds and let it run. Let it go a little and if it starts to shut down hold it some more. Don't run it more then about 1 minute doing that. Make sure the oil pressure gauge is reading pressure. Good luck.

Thanks! I am probably going to need to take a picture of it when I am back home on Monday and have you point me in the general direction of the shutdown solenoid. I have the manual and will check that first. VERY much appreciated!

It is the cylinder looking thing that when you push the start button it make movement. What the shutdown is pushing up is the lever you need to hold up to let it run a while. Take a picture and I'll help.

Here are a couple pics. I think I understand the solenoid. I held it in and the gen continues to run. I watched the pressure and it steadily rose to 50/max so I let go of the solenoid, it extended and shut down.

I attached the picture of the item in a square which needs attention. This thing shuts the genset down if it gets going to slow. (Too big a load). Sometime it needs to be adjusted or the little gears need to be cleaned. There should be a thumb screw on the device to remove the cover. Be careful the wires are hot so don't short them to the block. Remove the cover and I would spray some cleaner in there and let it run a few times before I tried to adjust it. You will see what I mean when you get into it. Good luck Paul
