You are overtaking a power driven vessel in a narrow channel and wish to leave her on your starboard side. You may

A. attempt to contact her on the radiotelephone to arrange for the passage.

B. proceed to overtake her without sounding whistle signals.

C. sound 5 short blasts.

D. All of the above.

A seems like the only logical answer but what if you can't make radio contact? B leaves you open for the vessel that has the right of way to swerve into you. C suggests imminent danger. What about the, and I can't remember the proper horn signal...one or two blasts?
 
It's two short blasts; then wait for an acknowledgement 2 short blasts from the boat being overtaken. If they don't answer radio or whistle signal, cautiously begin the overtake, ready for 5 short blasts if you have stumbled upon a channel hog. They do exist.
 
You MAY - not you must or should.
 
I'd first sound the appropriate sound signal. Of the above limited options, I'd go for A.
