Biscayne Bay

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Great idea. Larry. Maybe Motion30 and Hopcar and any other forum members could meet us for lunch. It would be nice to put some faces to names. We will see what we can do to work it out.

Anyone else going to the show let us know, and please join in.

This is starting to sound like fun! Should we start another thread where we can coordinate this get together?

Geez, guys I didn't know how much I was missing by skipping the upper keys last year. Won't make that mistake next May when we do the keys again.

In smaller boats, the loop up the New River and over/down the Dania Cutoff was always in order, but Big Duck isn't maneuverable enough for that run.

Nor would I take The Duck up the Miami River - although it's still worth dropping the hook and watching them drag those freighters out backwards.

What we can still do is a night run past Miami.

A log entry from quite a while back, with my Arima 1511 down that way.

Hi Jeff, the run up the Miami River isn't nearly as bad as you think. I've done it many times and enjoy it each time. If you hit Miami at the right time, there is a local historian (Dr. Paul George) who gives tours of the river and teaches you it's history. It's one of the shortest rivers in the US but it has a rich history. Be sure to turn left when you reach the Tamiami Canal. My store is on the right just before you get to the Bertram yard.

Never took the boat up the Miami River. Sounds like an interesting trip. How does a 14' air draft work with the bridges?

I like to watch the tugs front and rear towing and steering the island freighters in and out of the river.

Here is a shot from our slip at Coral Reef Yacht Club in Coconut Grove in daylight.

Same shot at night. Coconut Grove is a great place.

Don, I think there is only one bridge on the river you would have to open. If you come up the Tamiami Canal you'd also have to open the little swing bridge on South River Drive.
The South River Drive bridge is the oldest bridge in Miami. I remember when to open the bridge the tender would lower the gates, then walk out onto the bridge and flip big levers on each side of the bridge. He would then go back into the house and open the bridge. When the bridge was closed he had to go out and flip the levers the other way before he opened the gates. He or she can now do it all from inside the house now.

These pics are just perfect from my point of view today.

This one is for OFB. It's not Biscayne Bay, but one of our favorite beaches at the north end of Great Guana Cay, Abaco, Bahamas. If you look closely, you can see a couple of heads bobbing in the aqua water. By the way, we are the only ones on the whole beach. Now, how special is that?
