Russian vessels of all kinds are in the gulf & carribean all the time. Most we know about. I suspect a few, sub mostly, slip in without us noticing. I wonder how they found out about it, if it happened.

I wonder if this is SOP, to let them tinker around thinking that they're "undetected" (and they do that for us too). I mean otherwise we'd know that they knew what we think they don't know. It's a great game, why ruin it.

I think the "shock" of finding a sub in the gulf, that they probably knew was there all along, is more to influence the DOD budget #'s than it being an issue of national security.

I spent many years flying around chasing subs in the Navy. If they want to be undetected... they will be.

Only at heightened alerts do we even try to prosecute every sub in near shore theaters.

The sad fact is they could strike the US any time they like... but then again... so can we (and in even greater numbers).

The most likely threat is not the ancient Russian subs.

Any tramp steamer can launch near the Washington Boston mega area.

Any rented Lear jet can swoop to 45000ft or higher

Sure it needs to go 100 miles up for a total wipeout of all out computers .

But a nuke is a nuke so even just a 100 mile diameter wipeout would set us back by a great amount.

And of course the pulse goes UP as well as down , by by in view satelites .

I'd be more worried about a 'dirty bomb' than any Russian sub. And as far as EMP and satellites, they're all hardened for EMI/EMP and would live through anything we would do down here. They live in a much tougher environment day to day than that.
A Russian sub being 'discovered' in the Gulf is a political play on both sides. There is no tactical reason to get yourself into the shallow, warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico (international water btw).

Not if CAC8 was hunting them and I was in SS2. Oh, wait, that was 1976. Maybe things have changed a bit since then.

With the number of sunk and abandoned oil rigs in the GOM, it probably is a great training ground for collision avoidance.

The Crappy P3 and new Boeing cant realistically drop a nuke depth charge , with out loosing the crew .
