Twiisted, your pylons look tall enough to handle any surge.. Just tend them as the storm passes.

We are all hauled out and pressure washed. I got 8 stands. Took 1 hour to load me in the slings and haul me to the hill and then block the Blue Heron. I took the opportunity to pressure wash and noticed that once again my bottom paint failure from the crappy job the sellers yard did has cost more time and money.. I went ahead and put a gallon of paint on the bottom to cover the areas that are flaking off.. (keep in mind this bottom "job" is only 3 months old.. anyways blocks applied and boat on the hard. Canvas stripped and waiting for the storm...

We sold a lot of rope and fenders today. Even though we're at the edge of The Cone of Death, Miami boaters seem to be taking this seriously.

Here at hurricane-less California, "my" boatyard chains the front and rear pairs of six stands. Three points of support are also underneath the keel.

Isaac haulout

Blue Heron--what yard? I had mine hauled yesterday at Pelicans Perch. They probably have the highest ground of any around here.

."especially if not on good concrete."

And on dirt ? with 6+ inches of rain ?

Better stay close to adjust as the ground softens.

From St. Petersburg

I moved my boat from my covered slip to an uncovered slip in the same marina on Friday. I'm concerned that a tidal surge due to the storm will lift the boat high enough to impact the overhead cover. I seem to be the only one in the marina taking precautions but Friday was a bit early and I only did it because I high tailed it out of town on Sunday. Anyway I'm glad it's done, there could be a race to find uncovered slips by today, and well I got mine.

The predicted storm surge greater than 3ft.

My Insurance man says that statistically speaking, the least damaged boats during storms are the ones tethered to a dock at the residence where they can attended to. 2nd choice is hauled and on stands, where even the occasional punch in the nose ends up being a lot less damage than a sinking. Of course, if it ends up in the middle of a number 3 or more hurricane, statistics have a way of becoming as vague as insurance coverage.

That's good to know...but as in any real estate transaction...location...location...location.

Depends if there's storm surge or not, depends if the marina is built to withstand a decent storm surge, depends on the location of your house/canal....etc...etc

Srtatistics are great for generally speaking but when you apply them to a specific...good luck!

Insurance companies base their risks on 100,000s of thousands of units...I base my risk management on a unit of ONE!!!!:socool:

I put about 1500' of line out today and will be riding this one out. Good luck to my fellow Nothern GOM'ers

Isaac will finally be coming ashore this evening near Barataria Bay about 55 miles ESE of here, if that holds we'll be on the "good" side with more Northerly and NW winds which should lessen the tide surge, we'll see!
right now we are getting hit by the rain bands, light rain so far with 25 maybe 30 mph winds gusts Most of the stores were shut down by noon after the usual buying frenzy and a curfew will be in effect from 7PM till the morning.
Every politico from the President to the dog catcher has been on the tube milking the situation for what it is worth.,
Good luck all

BH, Mandeville has a lot of local flooding still so we can't get in to check the boat yet unfortunately. At home we had the expected storm debris. Fences are fine. 7-1/2" of rain so not bad. We lost lights twice for about 30 minutes. Unbelievable. From what I can tell, Gulfport got a LOT of rain.

The boat looks great. The house had about 2' of water under it witht the usual suspects of turtles, grass, snakes and logs. We never lost power and we had several cold beverages when the tide started roll out. My friends on the local rivers didn't fare so well with the surge and the rain, there will be damage. Several sail boaters broke loose and required rescue. The casinos will be open this weekend and I will be half lit tonight after shoveling marsh weeds all day. Here's a picture of the ol' girl with water on the way.

Yea, I'm curious what caused it to sink. I thought maybe it sat down on a piling on the stbd side, but I looked for scratches and nothing indicated this. Maybe a port line too tight? Hard to say.

Forklift,
glad to hear it! I have the same type of fender boards for my boat they work like gangbusters.
Glad your good to go.

Thanks BH. And as of this week I plan on revising my hurricane plan again. Paul (Swampu) told me of a boatyard close to our area. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna begin putting her on the hard there for future storms and let my slip in Louisiana go. For the additional slip cost, I can probably pay for 5-6 storms a year:)As soon as I can talk with the guys and check on how it works I plan on setting it up. Are you back in the water? Can I ask how much your haulout/ blocking cost and worked out? Honestly- I never realized there was a yard high enough in our area.

Maybe the monthly payment is what caused it to sink?
My thoughts exactly. It's funny how many people I know with boats did not follow their normal hurricane plan. Not so much as an extra line. I'm going to invest in another roll of 1 1/4" 600' line for next year.

Fork, Yea back in the water on Saturday, spent all day yesterday cleaning and rerigging canvas stowing gear, etc.. Absolutley agree on the haul out.. it was less anxiety. I would only do one thing different, instead of removing canvas, I will leave it on and roll it up.. the fly bridge canvas actually would have helped keep the Bimini tight and wouldnt have allowed the roll up/folding of the top. Life getting back to normal at the marina.

Swampu, I made an observation that the older the boat, the more care and diligence the Owner took. I saw a 1975 Trawler lovingly hauled out and fretted over, and a 2008 Sea Ray, left in the slip... not calling out Sea Ray, guys, I also saw a couple of Grady's left to their own.. not sure how many were lost here in Pensacola.

Haulout and Block cost for my Marina were 500.00 to get on the reservation list for a guaranteed spot (includes Stands and Chain) haulout was 300 and per day fee of 20.00 My total was just over 900.00 Insurance company paid 50%.

Thanks BH. I will start working on it tomorrow. Gonna check with insurance too.

Can you guys believe that the remnants of Isaac have headed back out into the Gulf and have a 50% chance of tropical cyclone formation? If it gets named, it will have a different name because the main system moved on up to the NE. I'm near New Orleans right now remediating storm damage.
