Sold-Westerbeke rebuilt 8BTD generator end
My old WB 8BTD gen set (1987) is being replaced this week.
The generator end was just rebuilt prior to my purchase of the vessel in 2014 (about 200 hours runtime).
The engine is DEAD with low compression in all cylinders and is heading for the scrap yard.
The yard is going to pull the whole gen set and put it on a pallet for a short time.
If interested let me know fast.
$1000. LOCAL PICKUP ONLY from Pine Island, FL. NOT SHIPPING!!!

I think I have a 1987 WB 8kw genny in my boat...
Not that I need a new one, but I like spares
How long would you be willing to hold it for? I'm planning to get my my scuba cert in March down in Florida...

About a week, 2 at most...
BTW, everything kind of worked but would not fire off due to 270# compression. Last oil analysis was high in aluminum, iron, chrome and sodium.
Around 2200 hours on the meter.

I talked with the yard today. They would store for up to 3 weeks, around end of January.
I also removed the remote gauge panel and electrical harness intact to go with sale.

The old gen is out. The WB remote gauge panel will be reused for the new gauges due to the difference in panel size. If no interest in the whole set, I will start parting it out. Send me a PM.
Some stuff that I will sell separately:
Generator end complete with armature
Starter
Heat exchanger
Fuel injection pump
sea water pump
coolant circ pump
fuel injectors 3
FI lines
Preheat relay
Exhaust manifold
Coolant recovery tank
Oil pressure sender
Oil pressure switch
Coolant temperature sender
Coolant temperature switch
Exhaust temp switch
Fuel lift pump
remote gauge panel wire harness

$2600 from Broward. I had a local mechanic install it for me and I'm waiting on that bill. It took him and another guy almost 5 hours to remove and replace and he does it for a living. I can't imagine how long it would have taken me.

Took me probably 8 hrs due to rusty bolts and worst was one isolation mount.
With shipping from Jersey to Broward and return to Wilmington, NC the whole thing cost $2500.
Took another day to fix the mounting area, but only a couole hours to fit together and crank her up.
Working great for the last 2 months and 60+ hours.

Here is the kicker - when we put it all together it wouldn't produce power. The new unit had a bad bridge rectifier.
I would have pulled my hair out if I was the one doing it.

You have to wonder if that unit was sent for rebuild BECAUSE of the bad rectifier.

troubleshooting these gensets with the right manual is pretty easy with 2 people thst understand a multimeter.
my son and I did mine one evening and deduced a bad exciter coil.
upon pulling the gen end off, looked like a muddy road in there instead of windings.....poor maintenance by the PO and it was next summers project for me...but it came early, 4 days prior to a 7 month cruise.... ouch.
hope someone snaps it up as they are pretty good gensets in comparison.

If compression is low, it could be rusty valves or stuck rings. Not a difficult repair for either. There is a good argument to fix it and sell as a running unit. With new elec end, probably would fetch like $3k on the open market.
