I'm shopping for a davit crane. My Ponderosa 47 did not come with one. (most of them did). Most of the davit cranes at my marina look similar, mounted on the sun deck (top) and pipe column to floor. This is would be my preference.
I am interested in the Atkins Hoyle 6500T (Toronto Canada) but I have never seen them out on the west coast.
I could use an opinion.

In my opinion, the Atkins Hoyle product is superior design to the great majority of mechanical davits, but is no better than its mounting. It's overbuilt for its rated capacity and the castings are top notch. The one you have pictured above is ideal with the hydraulic boom height adjustment and extendable arm. Without the extendable arm, the design reach is usually limited to 66 inches. That's good enough to bring most dinghys over the rail but you need to mount it pretty close to the rail to get the max reach and it limits the ability to position the dinghy easily in the center of a 14 ft. or more beam deck. They're not cheap. If it were me buying for your boat, I'd get the hydraulic boom jack and the extended boom just as you pictured above. Electric hoist is nice too, but they can also be added later.

The alternative is a nice looking pipe davit for less that has no extendable arm and likely no option for any additional boom height adjustment. New they run 1800 to 2500 or you build one like I did for about 1000 including installation. An economy level electric davit for about double as much if you buy new. You can find a used one, complete and in good shape for about 3500 at some salvage places, new could be 4-6K.
 
Pretty Davit Cranes

Most of the standard (sleek and modern) not ugly? are about $8-$10,000
The West Coast Davit WC800 is nice with a remote control. They are within driving distance and I can save the freight. But I really like the ugly one (Atkins & Hoyle). Ii's like a cool hot rod with all the parts showing. I just need someone who has one to jump in on this thread.

Ask Atkins and Hoyle for "references" -- if they've had any customers for that davit in your area, so you could go see?

Not familiar with West Coast or A&H, though I too like the looks of that A&H.

The only well established left coast davit companies that come to mind is Nick Jackson in Washington and Steelhead in BC. We looked pretty closely at the latter at the Miami boat show when considering up grading ours, and a guy we knew had one and liked it. I've seen them on Nordhavns and other top brands.

Yep most of all the 64 N's and under have Steelheads, the larger's have a mix of Steelhead and Marquipt. The only problem i hear about steelhead's is that the remote controller plugs are finicky and sometimes will crap out along with the proportional control.
 
FWIW, ran a boat that had a Steelhead Davit on it for 3 years or so and never had a problem with the remote control plug and socket. I also had very good service from them when needed.

Atkins Hoyle also make other marine items such as hatches, port holes etc.
Has anyone used any of their products?
Swinging the boom out and grabbing the dingy from the lower deck with a remote is almost a requirement in my mine. This prevents the outboard from banging the boat.
How do most of you do this?
