1989 Albin 50 Trawler.

Wife has suddenly taken ill and we will no longer be able to use the boat. Priced for immediate sale. $48,000 No where can I find a 50ft that floats and runs priced less. Currently located near St Petersburg.

THE GOOD: Built as a custom factory order by Albin, I believe only two were ever made of this model and no expense was spared in building. Unlike even the most expensive boats of this era, it has the high end aluminum framed windows (with self storing screens), moulded non-slip glass decks and a bright modern engine room that is fully sound proofed with foil backed lead foam sheeting, aluminum diamond plate flooring and aluminum sheeting on the walls. The other modern feature is the elimination of virtually all exterior teak which makes leaky decks a thing of the past and helps keep maintenance to a minimum. The extra wide side decks / gunwales which are sunken low in the hull midships make boarding a breeze and allows for safe movement around the boat in the worst conditions. The fully enclosed aft deck with wing doors is massive and contains a full size couch, love seat, chair coffee table, bar fridge and built in bar with hot/cold water. .

The open concept interior was designed to optimize living space for a cruising or live aboard couple and has teak panelling and teak & holly flooring throughout. The elimination of the traditional guest stateroom usually found in this size of boat freed up the space needed to add a large stand alone shower, massive salon and a full width galley with over 15ft of counter and cupboard space along with a breakfast bar, fridge, stove and over size sink. Also in the galley is our most valuable feature on the boat, a large cold plate Gunnert floor freezer driven by the inverter. The forward guest room (V-berth) has a large separate shower room and a two piece bath.

The salon has a full size pull out couch, two tub chairs, coffee table, writing desk and stools. There is storage galore and also a built in entertainment center which includes stereo, DVD, TV. The aft cabin has a queen walk around bed, lighted vanity desk, a hideaway stacked washer/dryer and loads of storage space everywhere. The second head is also found here and is a roomy three piece with a full size tub and electronic water saver toilet.

The lower steering station rivals that of a high end yacht rather than a trawler and has full instrumentation along with radar/ marpa multiple target tracking, dual gyro compasses, autopilot, GPS, two depth sounders, VHF, intercom, chart plotter / side scan sonar and engine Sync. An interconnected serial port also allows for the use of your favourite software for laptop plotting/navigation on both bridges and is integrated to the autopilot.

The bridge steering station also has all of the above including switching for search, docking & nav lights etc. as well as a Raymarine plotter and AIS VHF DSC transceiver and a remote control for the autopilot. The bridge itself is massive and runs over half the length of the boat with seating down both sides & storage underneath.

SPECS: Albin 50, 1989. Fiberglass construction. Beam 16ft, Bridge clearance 21ft (arch up). Dry weight 38000 lbs, low hour Twin Cat 3208 diesel engines, 2300 hours. fuel tanks 800 gal, water 200gal. 20KW Northern lights genny. 50 amp shore power.

ELECTRONICS: Raymarine Radar 10in display, 72 mile, 10KW 4ft open array with multiple marpa target tracking. B&G multi display - true heading, depth, speed.. Robertson auto pilot with remote. Standard Horizon AIS VHF integrated to Ray plotter. Garmin GPS display, upper/lower ICOM VHFs. Raymarine 410 multiple station hailer and intercom. Hummingbird 3D high res SIDE SCAN sonar with plotter. Maxima broadband marine receiver. Three 12 channel GPS antennas, Raymarine E80 plotter interfaced to AIS unit. Garmin 128 depth/fish finder. Two Simrad gyro compass's. Serial ports at both helms interfaced with autopilot.

FEATURES: Westinghouse Washer Dryer. Northernlights NL 854 genny. Heart inverter, glendinng engine synchronizer, quicksilver isolator. Maxwell windlass with dual controls. all GFI.120V outlets. Two 30 amp rate controlled battery chargers. Three 8D (new) and two 4D batteries. Halon system. Fresh water washdown. Bilge Flood alarm. Hull recessed docking headlamps. ITT 10" remote control spotlight. Wireless GSM cellular security system, wireless motion activated GSM cellular security camera. 1000lb aft deck crane. Reverso auto oil changer system. Bios 4 piece wireless weather station.

INCLUDES: New scuba dive hooka compressor with 60 ft hoses & reg. 60lb Bruce, 55 Lb Delta and 60lb Fortress anchors. All, lines, fenders bouys, life preservers, spare hardware, hoses, fittings, pumps, paints, cleaners, fibreglass repair materials, filters, many tools, greases, oil, dishes, appliances, etc.

RECENT UPGRADES 2014 to 2017. Replaced radar system. Added sidescan sonar, GPS and AIS VHF. New gyro compass. New hot water heater. Upgraded to 50 amp shore power. New bridge helm seat, New bridge speakers. Replaced all throttle & shift cables up & down,. Overhaul steering -new steering cylinder, new seals both helms, flush & fill. Overhauled rudders. New galley and bar fridges. New BBQ. Added camera and alarm system. New aft deck furniture, new salon upholstery. Air cond, fresh water, washdown & bilge pumps replaced. New upper bridge hatch. New Generator manifold, New life bouys & dock lines. Numerous hoses replaced. Refinished aft deck flooring. New macerators forward and aft heads & holding tank. New engine shields. Blasted & Powder coated all exterior engine vents. Repaired and/or installed new interior & exterior lighting throughout. Added numerous spares, hardware and fittings to inventory. Replaced all three 8D house batteries. New windshield cover, wipers overhauled. Much new wiring throughout. Replaced complete plexiglass bridge spray shield.

THE BAD: Port shaft is pitted & needs replacing, (starboard already replaced) Blisters in the bottom gel coat and in desperate need of bottom paint. (paint is on board) Numerous scratches. nicks and spider cracks topside. The topsides needs painting, side door needs repairs, Fold down radar arch needs work on hinges. Needs one air cond unit replaced, salon air unit requires repairs. Several seacocks are stiff & should be replaced. Engines need painting. Much unused leftover wiring needs to be pulled out. Alternatively, do as I did, forget the above, pour a drink put your feet up & enjoy your dirt cheap floating waterfront condo.

Will try to find more photos.

Greetings,
Mr. CK. Sending best wishes for your wife's recovery. Boats can be replaced. Good wives can't.

Yes, could you please find and post more pictures. I am extremely interested.

Thanks for your kind words RT. It has been a stressful ordeal. She had been on life support for quite awhile and it was touch & go but is now recovering well. Unfortunately however it is very unlikely she will be able to go boating again for both health and medical insurance reasons. It is a great disappointment as we had hoped to throw off the lines and spend our retirement exploring up & down the ICW. We took too long trying to be perfectly prepared I guess. Only goes to show, if you do not do it now the opportunity may be lost forever.

Tom, I will see if I can find more pictures.

Some questions....

Is it in satisfactory condition to move it to the Great Lakes in the Spring? Is there a place to leave it in Florida until say April? Do the windows leak and if so, is any of the interior wood water damaged? Would the entire boat need paint (including the hull sides), or just the cabin structure?

Thanks

Hi Rufus, that would really be a heartbreak to see it at home but owned by someone else. Wish it was there now, boats this size are quite rare and sell for far more than florida.

In answer to your questions.
Is it in satisfactory condition to move it to the Great Lakes in the Spring?
No, the port shaft would not likely hold up that great distance. I would also want to clean the fuel, it is several years old. Approx 400gal aboard.

Do the windows leak and if so, is any of the interior wood water damaged?
Yes to both... don't they all :) I have had it under cover since I bought it but clearly it has leaked in the past. There are dark stains under several but paneling is`rock solid. There is paneling in the V Berth that the veneer has wrinkled which is from the ceiling hatch being left open repeatedly.

Would the entire boat need paint (including the hull sides), or just the cabin structure? No Hull needs buffing but should be good for years yet. Main issue with the cabin paint is it had been painted before I bought it and the paint in several areas has shrunk exposing the old paint. Likely bad prep. I started sanding these out & priming but never finished.

Is there a place to leave it in Florida until say April? Yes there should be many places you would have to phone around. Note that it is a USA state registered boat.

Sorry to hear this. Best to you and your wife, and with your boat sale.

Sorry to hear about your wife Mate. I hope all will be smooth sailing for the both of you and your family real soon.

I am sure your vessel will sale fast. It's a real looker and has been taken care of.

All the best to you Mate.

Cheers.

H.

More pics as requested, sorry about the poor quality. Note some are several years old, the ugly helm chair was replaced and some bridge electronics had not been installed yet.

How many times have we all heard and seen this.

Yet another wake up call for the rest of us.

God bless, I hope you have many, many wonderful years together on the beach! Give her a huge big big hug from us! Right now - go on over there and do it!

Menz.

Hi Capt. Kangeroo.......sorry to read of your wife's health issues, hoping that all turns out well. We are interested in your boat, if she is still available. Could you pm me your personal contact info please? We are fellow Canadians as well, hoping to do the Great Loop.

Sorry for your troubles CK. Good luck consummating what "should" be an incredibly fast sale.

Capt K and wife - I'm so sorry to learn of your health dilemma. Hope that items soon improve.

Maybe as health is regained you could eventually locate a smaller, comfortable vessel and stay near to home while still enjoying the water.

Best regards,

Art

Capt. K.....

Despite a few chuckleheads here on TF....

I think overall its a good community and you and your wife would always be welcome on many boats from a few hours to a stretch of cruising.

I think in the big scheme of things that I know I suck at, sounding gracious is one of them....ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ASK.....

Shoot me an email if you are ever in need of a short boating fix.

I am no 50, footer, but uncomfy vee berths, cheap beer and my grouchy captaining is yours if you need that fix. :)

Good luck with the sale.

Thank you all for your thoughts and the wonderful encouragement. Although we have never met personally, over the years the wife and I have come to regard many on here on TF as our boating buddies and dear friends.

Menz, the wife sends a big hug back at you.

Art,as always you are a source of inspiration and are spot on. I am hoping at this point that "in the least" we can go back to bumming around the great lakes with something I can single hand. That said, going from a 50ft floating condo to a cuddy cabin will be a painful transition.

Scott, I would like nothing better than to drink cheap beer with a grouchy captain (your words not mine :) As a fellow Albin owner we can swap horror stories.

Hello Lars, I have a few who are definitely interested but yes it is still available. I will send you a PM with my contact details.

PS: While it is definitely built for heavy weather and much smaller boats have crossed the Atlantic, I don't think I would want to try a sunny afternoon cruise over to Cape Town :)

Capt. Kangaroo:

I live in Clearwater, FL and am interested.

Could you contact me by PM with your information please sir?

Thanks!

Jeff

Just to clarify:
Perhaps I should not have priced Summerplace at such a low value because I think it may be scaring some people away. I have had a number of contacts presumably because of the low price inquiring whether the boat was made of wood, has been sunk before, has a cored hull or if the engines were junk. The answer is no to all, it is entirely glass with the bonus of no exposed teak, has definitely never been sunk, does not have a cored hull and the Cat 3208 motors are the best part of the boat. They are low hours, start instantly, and purr like kittens.

Quite simply, my thought in pricing it so low was for a quick no haggle sale taking into consideration all of its flaws. It made no sense to try and hold out for more money since we can no longer use it and every day that goes by is just costing us more money without the enjoyment of use. Perhaps more importantly, the longer it sits unattended the quicker it will deteriorate and we are too attached to it to simply let it go to ruin from neglect. Bluntly put, if boating is not in our future we need to suck up our losses and get on with our lives.

For what it is worth, I also took a look at Yacht World and with the exception of house boats, wood boats and some garden planters, even it's vast data base could not come up with a single 50ft boat of similar design and year for anywhere near 50K. Despite the needed cosmetics topsides it is still a very handsome boat that runs like new and turns heads everywhere we have ever gone with it. Sadly none of my children or grandchildren are boaters or I would give it to them.

I haven't advertised it anywhere yet except here on the TF forum so I'm thinking I may post it on other web sites later this week or possibly raise the price to cover the brokerage fee and give it to a broker.

What I love about this boat is the lack of a teak overlay stuck on the exterior decks.

This will make the next owner happy as the deck should stay intact .

Reading the to do list only the shaft replacement would need to be done before casting off to cruise the ICW. I would get a case of fuel filters tho.

Lots of work like pulling unused wiring can be on on the hook, between naps and a good book.

Someone more into boat use than boat cosmetics may find a great deal here!

Capt Kangeroo,

We are probably neighbors... I'm also in St. Pete, but on the west side over by Madeira Beach.

First, the best to you and your wife, hoping for a fast and great recovery for her. And your warning about "doing it now" is spot on for a lot of us, myself included.

I wish I were in a better position to pursue this boat, looks great and very comfy. But just purchased my "loop boat" so timing is not good.

It will make someone a great boat. Good luck in the sale.

Best to you, and perhaps we'll meet up sometime in the area.

Hi BillyFeet, it is possibly sold. I should know better after the weekend. There is also another chap who has a conditional offer pending financing but if neither closes I will certainly let you know.

By the way, I love your avatar. It reminds me of a certain grouchy captain here on TF that I know...;)
