WANTED: Transmission for a V-P MD17C in an Albin-25
My Transmission seems to have worn out or wrecked the Syncronizer for reverse gear. Am looking for a used transmission. Our Albin is a 1976 Deluxe with the original motor.

I would guess it is a worn 'cone clutch' AKA 'sliding sleeve' that is causing the slippage. If you have a Volvo MSB transmission, that part number is 839628.
The MSB transmission was used on engine models MD1B, MD2B, AQD2B, MD3B, MD5A-5C, MD6-6B, MD7-7B, MD11-11D, MD17-17D. Might find in old dealer stock, or used somewhere. There were lots of those engines produced. Not sure if the complete transmissions were interchangeable, but a dealer or Volvo Penta USA could likely tell you that.
BTW, MarinePartsEurope.com still shows it as being available, but the price is a whopping 668,34 EUR, and you would likely need additional parts to completely repair the transmission.
Best of luck!

I can't tell from the picture what the tranny looks like, but I have a 1:1 Velvet Drive that been in my way on the garage floor for a long time that I'd let go cheap if It work for you. I'm about an hour and a half from Rockford, in the Quad Cities.

Thanks for the info, guys. I'll know more when I go get my boat from Larsen Marine (Waukegan, IL). My engine manual is in the boat. Contacting the Albineers is a good idea.
Larsen said the tranny "is no longer available", but do not know who their source is.

Why not just get it fixed?
If nobody local call Mike at Harbor Marine in Everett WA. The're big on BW VD but I think they work on just about anything. They rebuilt my BW and are highly regarded locally and afar.

I will check , I bought a spare MD 3B for our 90/90 and do not remember if the tranny is still attached.
Yes the cones get dead and no longer hold,.
Some will install backwards , and you get another decade out of it.
If the gears are torn up , simple replacement is the cure.
Located in FL.If it exists.
Larry M lists the MD 7 , as using the same tranny as the MD 3B.
I am not sure,
The MD 7 is 13 -17 hp , the 3B is 3 cylinders and rated 35 hP.
IF it is the same (Im in CT and cant go look) you are in luck, I have a MD 7 tranny in excellent condition .
http://hartford.craigslist.org/boa/4599487812.html.
It in in CT and HEAVY , but will be in FL in Nov if you need it.

Thanks for the reply, FF! One of my engine manuals if for the MD3B, and the longtime, original owner had crossed out the number and written MD17C above it. I'm not aware what the differences are, but they sure look similar, superficially, at least.
If It turns out that your spare motor still has the transmission attached, and we work out a deal, my wife and I intend to visit her brother in Punta Gorda sometime in March. We could drive from Illinois instead of flying, if there is hardware that needs hauling.
Am including a photo which shows the power plant in our 1976 Albin-25.

FF and Moby Nick,
The list of transmissions and engines I found all use the same cone clutch. In every case, the MB transmission was NLA and did not reference the original part numbers. I did not mean to suggest that the complete transmissions were interchangeable, only that certain parts were in the event of a rebuild. In fact, my guess is that the gear ratios and output flanges would likely be different over that wide range of engine sizes.
Years ago I rebuilt an MB transmission on an MD6A and again on an MD7B. That is the extent of any first-hand experience. The cone clutches had worn out in both transmissions and would no longer hold in forward gear. I did hear about the 'reversing the cone clutch' trick, but new parts were available, so that is the way we went.

Still waiting for a neighbor to go look and see if the tranny is in.
Remember there is not usually a weight limit for carry on , it just has to fit in the space , so flying with the tranny might be fine.

Where is the tranny located in Florida, FF?
My Albin and Volvo-Penta manuals are in the boat, which I will be towing home on Thursday. I need to look at what transmission part number is listed.

AS I understand it the MD3B is the same as the MD 17C, it was just a numbering change.
The Volvo web site should have the tranny parts numbers , I would assume they are the same.
Or perhaps Larry M can look in Da Book?

In the air most of the day today, but I will try to compare some of the major part numbers tonight when I get back. Will advise.

Have learned more about what Transmission I need
I have manuals for both the MD3B and the MD17C motors.
according to them, the MD17C uses a MSB (Mono Shift) Reverse Gear with 1.91:1 reduction, while the MD3B Manual shows an RB transmission with an 1.81:1 reduction as well as the MS Transmission.
Apparently the transmission on MD3B/RB combination uses a common oil bath in common with the crankcase. The MD17C/MS combination has separate oil bath for the transmission, as well as water cooling for reverse gear. I do not see any water cooling hoses on the MS transmission illustrated in the MD3B Manual.
As my photos show, my transmission is an MS, which matches the illustration in the MD17C manual.

FF:
My Brother In Laws location at Punta Gorda appears fairly convenient to your transmission "50mi east of Ft Meyers".
Do you know anything about the transmission's condition?

>Do you know anything about the transmission's condition?<
Only that it was removed from a running boat when they tired of Volvo Parts prices.
We will be in FL after Nov 1 , so can send photo then.
