Fully restored 1983 Monk 36
Well, I am sure for those that know me on this forum, you are shocked to see this thread! * *As you know, and as I have posted here, I love our trawler like none other. *We bought her just over a year ago with the thought that for once, I'd keep her for a long time....like 20 years! *We proceeded with our full refit/restoration of her with that mindset and pretty much spared no expense in her refit as I only wanted to do it once. *My family has concluded though that a 36 footer is too small for a young family of 4 and a dog so....we are moving up it seems. *If everything goes through we will have a larger pilothouse boat soon. *Accordingly, our happy little trawler shall be looking for a new owner. *NOTE that I may make you go through a background check to assure you are a good and loving owner!! *
Our refit process and details on our Monk are fully documented on our blog which can be found here:
www.TrawlerLivingLight.blogspot.com
I have a 3 page summary outlining the completed projects to bring her back to better than new but it goes from recoring (synthetic coring NOT plywood!) of foredeck and aft bridge deck, converting to 50 amp service, painting entire topsides, complete makeover of galley including new appliances and granite countertops, reconfiguration of forward stateroom for bunk beds, new aft head (best you can buy!!), new bottom paint last year, to everything in between. *
Low hours (about 1,900) and 6.354 Perkins 135hp coupled to borg warner transmission with 1.75" SS shaft, Northern Lights/Lugger 8KW generator with soundshield and only about 325 hours (newer generator but not brand new...not sure of year).
She spent exactly her first half of her life in the San Diego area and the last 14 years in 100% freshwater. *Specifically, Lake Lanier in Atlanta, GA up to last year and on the TN River in Chattanooga since last year. *Kept under covered since in freshwater so for the last 14 years.
I would cruise this trawler anywhere a trawler of her class can go and after all we have done to her, have absolute faith in her in every regard. *She is a special vessel in my book....just wish I could make her at least 5' longer and maybe 2' wider to fit everyone in the family for longer trips. *She is actually great for our family even for weekends anchored out but gets tight on longer ventures. *
All records are open book to buyer. *If you are looking for a classic single screw trawler that has enjoyed loving and lavish ownership with no expense spared that is ready to cruise...here's your boat. *Go to my blog for 20 million pictures. *
Contact me if interested. *I really want her to go to a good home if everything goes through (only selling if deal on other boat closes)....she is a special vessel in my opinion...we just need more room though I must confess I think our Monk is big enough but who am I to argue with a family that wants a bigger boat? *I've been on a lot of older boats and a lot of older trawlers and this one will be found to be top notch by the most discriminating buyer. * :cowboy:

You're going through what we just went through this last winter. Once the prior boat (family member) left the dock it was full steam ahead with the new girl!

I understand how you feel about a background check for a potential new owner. *We sold our Alberg 37 in 2009 and still wonder about her and if she is being well cared for.
Can you say what trawler you are hoping to buy?

RE: Fully restored 1983 Monk 36
Well, it appears that was the fastest deal that never was!!
The boat we were going to do a deal on was one of the bayliner 45' pilothouses...not technically a trawler but with twin 220hp diesels they get darn close to trawler economy at hull speed (about 5 GPH) and a good layout with big salon and nice pilothouse. But long story short, it ain't happening all of a sudden due to listing broker telling me one thing and doing something entirely different so we aren't selling our Monk unless we have something already in the works!
We love our Monk dearly....just would not object to having a 3 stateroom vessel for us and the kids. Stay tuned though, you never know what will happen next! :cowboy:

LOL Al! I am not handing in my badge (the killer salary and world power is too intoxicating)- I am just going to reroute the url to the bayliner owner's club.
Don- no- not that one- it was down river a good bit.
Price....still working on that minor detail. I am not going to sell without another boat lined up (though that would certainly free me up to do the next deal). It would be a reasonable price though. The problem is, in all honesty, I have never been happier aboard a vessel than while at the helm of our Monk...3 staterooms and some more space would be nice though.

*Yeah, and not to mention the pleasure of more maintenaince to fill our spare time.* You have been spending entirely too much time drinking wine on the back deck.

Tony,* Look at this deal on a 3 stateroom Grandbanks.
If you get a boat of this quality you will never regret it.
Price is well below what others are asking.** Act fast!

Tony,* My trawler friend, I am sorry.* The diagram of the interior in the image gallery shows the 3 stateroom layout,* but the rest of the images prove she is the galley down 2 stateroom model.* Too bad.* Maybe I can buy her, I really like this one.

RE: Fully restored 1983 Monk 36
John,
The pics I have up were just the ones I happen to have on my computer...they are not "official" marketing pics. If I proceed with marketing her despite the other deal falling apart and I put her on YW, etc. I will take some real pictures. As a broker, most of my listings average 75-100 pictures online and are high quality. It is rather ironic that my own boat suffers with the worst pictures at the moment.
No teak decks for me. 3 staterooms a must. Thanks for keeping an eye out!

Tony, I wish I could find another Sea Ranger 47 just like ours for you. *
We had looked at a similar Bayliner before we bought Delia Rosa and decided against that boat because of what we thought might be a safety issue. *The Bayliner does not have full walk around decks and that for us was a must. *We were also warned about possible maintenance issues neglected by previous owners as the engine room access isn't great.
Anyway, you already know that we think our Sea Ranger 47 Raised Pilothouse with*3 staterooms and even a bathtub.... *is the perfect family boat..... *we do have teak decks but they no longer leak!!!

Fully restored 1983 Monk 36
Well, things sure come around in a funny way sometimes. Previous buyer that had the 45' pilothouse we were interested in could not come up with the $$$ so we now have her under contract and a deposit down for her purchase. Thus, we are proceeding with selling our happy little Monk. If you are interested I may want some character references to confirm you will continue to be a good steward of her after all the love and money we have put into her. She is like a virtually new boat and shows excellent. Here is her official ad and oodles of pictures:
<a target="_blank" title="http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1983/Monk-36-2403578/Chattanooga/TN/United-States">http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1983/Monk-36-2403578/Chattanooga/TN/United-States</a>
She not the cheapest of the Monk 36's out there, certainly not the most expensive, but stands above her peers in regards to condition of systems, hull, interior, etc. *From her home in Chattanooga she can be cruised anywhere in the world through the rivers and lock system so anywhere coastal, up to the great lakes, east coast, etc. *Loopers are all down around TN right now so the perfect time to wave goodbye and start the loop. *We will miss her when she sells, I may in fact cry, but the 3 staterooms will be nice for our family if everything checks out.

Tony, I really, really wish I was in the position to buy your Monk. As you and your family have proven it would be a great first trawler for my family of four. Having a record of all you went through to get it where it is today will be invaluable to the new owner. You even show a picture of it on a trailer ready to ship here to the NJ coast! Unfortunately the timing is right for us. Best of luck with the sale and can't wait to see pictures of the new boat!

RE: Fully restored 1983 Monk 36
Thanks all....I must confess it feels very weird seeing our Monk up on yachtworld! The family is excited about the pilothouse and whoever buys our Monk is truly going to be getting a trawler in top condition in my opinion. Had I known we would be selling her I may not have spent money on her like a drunken sailor but I am pleased with her and it was a labor of love so I can't complain.
Grant, the Monk is a great boat. If things change and you could swing it let me know. She is a fun and peaceful boat for sure.
