Hello Brian,

I agree with you and I do miss it!

It was the best at that time until the company dissolution in January 1982. It did held up and bonded.

It was a blend of urethane, phenolic and a UV filter. You could thin it with turpentine as easy as it was and so simple! And very affordable (8.00$ approx. a quart) compared the product use today! Approx. 40.00$ a quart.

Today a quart of "popular orange- looking stain finish" at your local discount marine chain store, you will pay $30.99 approx. for 32 ounces. Then price a can of Dutch varnish at the same place. You will pay $23.99 approx. for 34 ounces. The Bristol Finish Quart kit is $59.95 for 44 ounces.

It is a mystery as to why this product is no longer available or they were bought out and closed to make place to progress...

Bristol Finish should go 4 times longer than "orange stain finish" between maintenance coats, and 10 times longer than the varnish.

You spend 22% more in order to receive an increase in performance of 400%.

Compared to the varnish, you spend 43% more to receive an increase in performance of 1000%. The return on investment indicate that Bristol Finish will pay for itself more than once.

Kindest regards, Normand

REAL MOUNTIE has his first visitor interested in buying her. I change my maintenance schedule and cleaned the inside in order for this visitor make his inspection. I have to make a correction, SlowGypsy drove 15 hours and 30 minutes to make his visit. Lucky man no wait at USBorder.

I invited him to stay overnight as he had to return early in the morning to get back to his commitments. SlowGypsy enjoyed his visit, at the same time he has some challenges before pursuing his dream of acquiring REAL MOUNTIE. He has to sell his beautiful 41' Colvin Doxy, schooner.

I agreed with him that buying a second vessel while having one is not an appropriate strategy. SlowGypsy, is an experienced sailor, single handling his schooner, he graciously offered to helped my to lower the mast as this was part of my maintenance program (change the anchor light for a LED, reinforce the radar platform for lowering the mast rig).

He suggested that in early evening the sun is more tolerable as we had a hot day.

I did benefit from SlowGypsy experience in making some improvement with the rigging to facilitate the process of lowering the mast. I enjoyed his company and discussions.

Thank you SlowGypsy!

In good condition, this vessel is cheaper than an similar dimension vessel on the market. For example try to find a decrepit Pilgrim around 70,000$.

Over $30,839.00 were spent in maintenance and upgrades.
(The prices indicated do not include Labour cost)

If you gutted the boat, ie pulled and replaced all the tanks, engine, electronics, wiring, galley, head, stripped, stained and varnished all the woodwork and repaint the hull and decks, fixed all the soft spots in the deck you could easily spend easily 70,000$ just inn materials. Now imagine the man hours ... But if you were doing it for yourself, I estimate a skilled person year or 2000 hours being gobbled up. Paying yard prices at $100/hr the labor costs would be $200,ooo in labor. $70,ooo for materials, $70,000 for the hull and you are into it for $340,000$.

This is why you cannot construct an equivalent quality vessel at this price today.
The interior construction of this vessel is the pride of cabinet maker. This quality would be prohibitive cost at today inflation price. In fact, Ted Gozzard declared to the previous owner Jim Elliott during a visit at NorthCastle Marine, that he lost more than $50,000.00 Cdn when he sold Hull number 41 in 1989. Here is an example for a Pilgrim 40 sold on January 15 1987 at Annapolis, MD for a delivery in May 1987, one US $ was 1.3615$ Cdn. The basic retail cost of a Pilgrim 40 was 187,575.00$ USD and optional equipment was $33,820.00$ USD for a grand total of 221,395$ USD.

Please check what cost 221,395$ in 1986 would cost 470,536.59$ in 2014.

Source: The Inflation Calculator

Source: The pre-1975 data are the Consumer Price Index statistics from Historical Statistics of the United States (USGPO, 1975). All data since then are from the annual Statistical Abstracts of the United States

In 2016, this 1986 Pilgrim 40 will be considered in Florida state as being eligible for registration as an "antique vessel", being a 30 year old boat.Section 328.72(2)(a), Florida Statutes, provides for antique vessels to be exempt from the annual base registration fee. Upon receipt of this certification form, which must be completed by the owner or a licensed marine surveyor, the county can issue a registration certifying the exempt status.

Looking GOOD, Normand! 👍
ps., - you might have left a few greasy finger marks to prove that it really IS a boats' engine room!

Now get 'er in the water and go cruisin'!

Greetings Mr. RT Firefly,

It is nice to hear from you.

We certainly do enjoy your comments and pictures that suggests cleverness and quickness of mind to spark a good smile and provoking laughter!

I made a special effort to show the engine compartment (room) where I like to do bilge yoga as I know that you are interested with engines.

Hoping you are well and thank you for your comments and contributions in TF,

Kindest regards! Normand

Many thanks for all of those photos you have posted Montie. I'll make a link to them from that 'redesign subject thread' I started sometime ago.

I understand there was a magazine article about the Pilgrim boats in the June issue of Passagemaker. I missed that, and when I went to check the local mag shop yesterday that issue was no longer on the shelf.

Was it a good article?...worth pursuing a copy of that mag??

Hello Brian,

I hope you are well. It is nice to hear from you. Unfortunately, I could not find a copy of the Passemaker magazine to buy. It was a friend who told me about it. Once I get a hard copy I will be able to confirm if it is worth to download a PDF copy. I am still trying to find a copy and it is a challenged while cruising the Canal.

This is very long thread but I assume that this Pilgram 40 has been sold.

I would like to know when another one comes up for sale. Seriously interested in purchasing one.

We have cruised from Duluth Minnesota to Antigua.... The NY State Canal System is my absolute favourite. Don't miss a walk through the park to the waterfall in Holley, or Fairport or Seneca Falls or Tonawanda or .... well actually don't miss any of it.
8 days tll' we Leave Toronto for the Bahamas, we'll keep an eye out for Real Mountie in the Canal.
