Other: I HAVE A 4 CYLINDER GAS ENGINE WITH ONLY 19 HOURS , can Trawlers use them ?

I am on TF looking around for my next boat
Trawlers known for slow economical cruising
Do some of them have 4 cylinder gas engines
Mercruiser
165 HP
19 hours on meter
Self contained cooling
electronic ignition
4 barrel Rochester carb
marine alternator
This engine is economical and JUST WONDERING , have manufactures installed small 4 cylinder engines on trawlers ?

I am considering a Trawler for my next boat , Presently have
2004 Regal , 30 ft , twin engine gas engine cruiser .

The answer is that you do not see many inboard gasoline engines on "trawlers".


There is a trend towards outboards on trawlers 35' and under- the TT35, Rosborough 22 and 246s, etc. In this case the convenience, space utilization, ease of maintenance outweighs the lower efficiency of gassers.

A gasoline engine makes between 10 and 12 hp per gph of fuel. A diesel does 16 to 20.

If the boat is older and hasn't been repowered with a gas engine and low hours, run don't walk away from it. On boats, this is true for diesels as well, higher hours is better than significantly low hours. An idle motor is a dying motor. My boat gas stern drive engine had 320 hours on it, just finished repowering it.

Look at it this way. My F.L. weighs about 600 pounds, has six cylinders and makes 120 hp on diesel. WOT at 2,500 rpm

Your little four banger probably weighs 250 pounds, has four cylinders and makes 165 hp, on gas. WOT probably 4,500

Which one do you think would do a better job pushing a slow heavy boat ?

Now that depends on what the continuous cruise power demand is for the boat in question. The gasser would want a lower reduction gear than the diesel and would be less efficient, but if cruise power is under 80hp, either would work, as either should be able to put out 80hp for hours on end without complaining.
