Thanks everyone...
We anchored in VonDonop Inlet on NW Cortes Isl last night. Awoke to a great morning. Too lazy to move quick...just enjoying the sunshine. Awesome weather for October! Was treated to a Cape Cod Catboat passing by this morning. Such pretty lines. Seemed odd seeing a traditional NE style boat out here in the NW.
My other boat is a cape cod cat. Yes they can be pleasing to the eye.
Tied up at Gorge Harbour Marina here on Cortes Isl.
Beautiful well kept grounds! Went for a walk and couldn't believe how tame the deer are....even with fawns.
Heh.....Just cuz Florida is the "sunshine state" doesn't mean other places don't have good weather too!!
😄😄
Honestly, I've been out here since July 12th and I think have had 2 rain days and a few sprinkles on a couple of others. It's been a very dry year here. In my 10yrs cruising falls here I've never seen this many sunny days. Not complaining at all tho!
So nice out we took a 1-1/2 mile walk over to Whaletown. Seemed longer with all the hills and corners but a really nice walk through forest. Whaletown has a tiny post office, small mooring field and a government dock. Was cute as a Small floathouse at the dock ended up being a dental practice.
Tiny old church. Lots of character
View from the dock
Dental float
I think people are drawn to smaller boats. A number of years ago I sailed a Flicka...a very salty looking and capable 20ft sloop. No matter where we anchored or tied up, there were soon admiring eyes and compliments to follow.
Not since that Flicka have I owned a boat that drew as much attention and received as many compliments. I think it's a combination of a good looking design, colours, and the fact that at an honest 28ft... a relatively small boat. For whatever reason, people seem to like Emma B
Small boats can be so cute. Just like small cars. Like Mini-Coopers. Like VW Beetles. Even the TT 35 could be pushed like a PT Cruiser. You can't paint a Cadillac like a Mini-Cooper.
Back at Cambell River for my friends flight out. We were lucky again on our trip from Cortes as we saw 4-5 Humpback whales playing together as Orcas do. Was great to see.
I like Cambell River as there is so much so close to the marina. Great community on the docks here as well.
I get a kick out of the other Camino. It is hull #3 so a 1989 or 1990.
So right now there is one of the oldest directly across from one of the newest.
Great forecast for the next week. Hoping for one more tour through Desolation Sound before hauling out.
It’s a cool, wet and dreary day here. Marinas are no fun on these days...
I much prefer to be underway as rain days can give a really mystical quality to the coastline as it unfolds.
Have been looking at pictures and thought I’d share one of the several wild...but tame deer that hang around Cortes Island. I’ve never seen bucks this tame but there were 2 of them relaxing and neither moved as I walked by about 30ft away.
After an amazing run of unbelievably good weather.....fall has arrived!
Last several days have been high winds and rain to driving rain at times.
But...it is md October in the PNW.
Currently Hunkered down at Heriot Bay marina until things let up but it isn’t looking pretty for several days....
At least the jelly fish doing their fall schools are entertaining.
Good thing I have a few new books I got up at a Billy Proctors in the Broughtons.
It’s been blowing good for several days but the wind laid down this morning so I’m off for one more mini cruise into Desolation Sound. High SE winds forecast the next several days but I’ll be snug anchored in Melani Cove. Will be nice as I doubt there will be anyone else out this time of year.
Added some fuel before leaving Heriot Bay Inn. I really like the place. Roche Harbour it’s not but it is super friendly, very funky and the food is great at th3 restaurant.
Pics are leaving this morning
Had an awesome run yesterday from Heriot Bay to Melanie Cove in Desolation Sound. Took the longer back route and down Waddington Channel. So pretty with multiple skinny waterfalls running again after the recent rains.
It may be colder, but fall cruising is prettier to me as the mountains get snow capped and there is a bit of colour in some trees. The fact you typically have anchorages alone is a bonus as well if it’s solitude you’re seeking.
I’m surprised to have data here... its very slow but I’m on...
I’ll post this first then try a picture or 2
