I am filling in a form for property taxes on my boat (welcome to California.) You can see I had to choose between Trawler and Motor Yacht (amongst others). What should I do?

As you can see from the second part of the form one of the possible usages is Commercial Fishing.

I decided Stillwater is a Motor Yacht and not a Trawler.

Not trying to stir anything up of course

I would fill in inflatable and declare the KK the tender to...at least for tax purposes...

Put down trawler and be done with it.... if they ask what you fish for then worry about it...or tell them it doesn't matter because you checked pleasure use.

At least in my world... people seem to know what a recreational trawler is...it is only a few here on TF that want to argue it.

I don't think there's a difference in cost. There's a flat rate as far as I know.

I'm assuming that since commercial fishing is an option then trawler means a fishing boat.

Nope....look at the selections, do you see longliner, purse seiner, gillnetter, etc, etc....? Look what is on both sides of the trawler selection....a list of fishing boat types?

They mean exactly what you and I have and about 99% of the boaters I know would agree...only some here who actually think they have a handle on things keep arguing what a tiny bit of research quickly proves ignorant.

Even the state knows that people have a good idea what a trawler is and have it listed.

You can put down whatever you want and not too much can be argued one way or the other....but please stop listening to the chest beaters on here.

Not stirred up...just advising how to accurately fill out a form you asked about.

No skin off my nose no matter what you put down...just hard for me to believe a few people I haven't even met can alter others opinion even when the state thinks is normal.

Have at it either way....I had a harder time tying to answer what a RHIB was....

The year around cruising and plethora of places to go makes the California taxes worth it.

I was living in Santa Barbara, Ca, when Prop. 13 rolled back the property taxes. The state and local governments were looking for any excuse to get more money. I owned a 15ft MacGregor catamaran and I got a property tax bill for it in the mail. Their assessed value was three times the price of a new boat. I sent them classified adds of comparable boats. They wouldn't budge, so I ended up giving the boat to my neighbor and his son. I should mention I was a starving student at the time. Also, all the cat owners kept their boats at the city beach all summer. This had been going on for years. The city decided they had to buy permits to leave their boats there. In one week all the boats were gone. I don't miss California at all.
