Boat registry

Documented boat or State/local registration? In my case CF numbers. What are the differences? Benefits?
Thanks
Jim

Greetings,
Mr. jc. Short and partial answer. Documentation is a federal process like a passport. Licensing is a state process like a drivers license. Foreign customs officials may take a more favorable view of a documented (federal) vessel than a licensed (state) vessel.

Documented is handy (necessary?) for international travel and avoids having numbers plastered on the bow. In some states, federally-documented boats also need to be registered with the state so one could be subject to annual fees twice.

Greetings,
Mr. mp. I don't think documentation is necessary for "local" international travel. Small boats regularly visit the Bahamas and Canada and I don't expect those vessels are documented. I haven't a clue about Mexico or France which, in total, are the 4 foreign countries within easy reach (local) of the US.
