The rats are leaving the ship or business is booming.

If anyone wants to work for Mr. Soria, he is hiring.

I would love to see him convicted of something, but that's not likely to happen, so the second best is cease and desist.

Now, one thing for sailerman in his pursuit. Check out the lawyer on the supposed letter from his attorney. You could be lucky and find there is no such person and in many jurisdictions that makes him guilty of a crime by impersonating a lawyer.

His lawyer

BandB,

I too wanted to verify the lawyer claim. I called his law office and ask to verify that Soria is actually a client. They would not confirm so I left a voice mail with the lawyer. He called me back and said yes he does represent Soria. He did confirm that I sent him a reply to his lawsuit threat.
However it is obvious to me that he did not read my email, look at the attachment where I documented the same negative reviews unchanged or been paid to pursue the threat.

By the way this attorney is listed as the legal council in an arbitration set for March 9 between Soria and his former business partner, Ed Reiner.

Which brings up the prior entity of vesseldocumentation.us and apparently a prior website developing company and the current, Websites Depot which has a site designed just like Soria's.

OK, consider these reasons.......registration number has to be painted or otherwise secured to the bow. Another is cost. Documentation was free up until a couple of years ago and now costs $26 or so. Massachusetts registration for my 40' was $100/two years. I may be greater now. Also the CG provides better traceability of ownership for another. Yes, states have titles....many do not.

Many mortgage companies want federally documented vessels because first ships preferred mortgage trumps most other liens. Seamans wages and salvage are the exceptions. Obviously most of our boatsa aren't going to have seamans wages in the equations. Like Real estate, ownership and encumberances are easily traced.

It is worth it just to not have those ugly registration numbers on the bow. But yes, some lenders will only lend on documented vessels.

USCG Documented Vessels Beware

If you have a USCG Documented Vessel be aware the annual renewal cost is $26. If you are being asked to pay more than $26 you are not on the Coast Guard Documentation website. Prices of $50 to $100 are being charged by so called "Independent Service Providers" to submit your renewal. They will approach you via a letter by from the US Mail at the time of your annual renewal to sell you their service. Beware and don't overpay!

Here is the REAL pay.gov site to renew:
https://www.pay.gov/public/form/start/1175233

It's easy and quick!

Thanks

Yup. Thanks for the reminder Norm. I just got my official USCG renewal in the mail the other day, about two weeks after a renewal offer from one of the sleazy outfits.

I agree that this is very valid information for us all. There are multiple bad players out there trying to grab your money for something that is very simple and inexpensive to complete yourself. To keep this thread from becoming a company bash, let's avoid naming the bad players and keep the word alive to our bretheren that the ONLY inexpensive way to update your vessel's documentation is via the USCG links at a USA government .mil or .gov website.

There should never be a surcharge or renewing credit card authorization if you're on the government site. Some bad players out there are doing everything they can to make their website and mailings look like the product of government officials...but they are NOT.

I received the same scam in the mail a few weeks ago. This one was from usdocumentation.us and suggested that I go to their website to renew. A couple things about the letter got my attention and raised my attennas. The letter was printed in color. I've been getting these renewal letters for years, always in black and white. Also, the .us extention denotes a commercial website rather than .gov or .mil that you'd expect from the Coasties. And going to the website, they wanted $75 for a 1 year renewal rather than $26, the actual cost. Plus they'd get my credit card number.

Thinking that maybe USCG had hired these guys as agents for them, I visited our local Coast Guard detachment in Bellingham and spoke with the officer of the day. This person knew of no such agency arrangement for documentation renewal, took a copy of the letter and forwarded it to the Coast Guard's NCIS for investigation. I also gave a copy to the Port of Bellingham so they'd know this scam was in play and could advise other boat owners. The Port of Edmonds to the south of us has sent letters to their tennants, advising them of this scam.

I did mine online in just a few minutes at the official USCG documentation site.

If you intend to deal directly with the US governemt then make sure whatever site you are on has a .gov url.

Anything else is a commercial for profit site.

If you want to use a commercial site, thats fine as well, just be aware that the commercial sites charge a fee for their service.

USCG Documented Vessels Beware

I just realized after reading this thread that I've never gotten a renewal for my documentation. I know (or thought) the boat was documented because the lender required it.

Interesting...

It shows up in their database but there is no expiration date shown like I see on other boat's data sheets. Maybe the lender is paying to renew?

Renewal by mail is easy. But finding the overseas stamp for Nigeria was difficult.
