Is a water cooled exhaust manifold needed ?

Forgive my ignorance yet again Gents, I have been offered a low hours Kubota genset from a lighting tower (8KVA) - is it possible or advisable to hook it up to the existing gensets heat exchanger (instead of the light tower radiator) and water exhaust or does it require further marinization such as a water cooled exhaust manifold ?

I tried looking up 'marinizing diesels' without much luck....
 
Well. . . . . yikes. .:eek: . Unless this generator has the same engine, then it is unlikely that it will accept a bolt on heat exchanger and exhaust manifold from a different unit.

I believe you will most likely want to marinize the generator with components that fit it. You might check around for wet exhaust manifolds, heat exchanger and appropriate pump to determine if it's worth your time and money.

Otherwise might be a nice addition to your house??

It will require more cooling ( a powered fan) in the engine space or noisemaker box , but a wet exhaust manifold is not a requirement.

There are many imitation asbestos tapes that can be used to avoid a fire from an errant item.

IF you do purchase a wet manifold use a larger heat exchanger and keep the manifold on the fresh water cooled circuit. Dump the sea water in the exhaust with a raised elbow , which are cheap to replace.

Check Mesa Marine or E bay for a manifold if desired.
 
My Phasor 6.5 kVA genset has a Kubota D905 3-cylinder diesel engine. Phasor use a combined water-cooled manifold/heat-exchanger.

There is currently a very worn genset (Kubota 2 cyl) with a wet exhaust and heat exchanger. I want to replace it with the 3 cyl and larger genhead however that is not currently marinized. I would naturally not use the radiator etc and intend to hook it up to the wet exhaust and heat exchanger with fresh water /glycol in the engine system. I wanted to know if I needed to use a water cooled exhaust manifold or could I use the existing one on the 3 cyl and just have it exit to the existing exhaust.

I shall try to find a water cooled manifold just in case and definitely keep all hooked up to the fresh water circuit. The sea water currently does go into the exhaust so that will stay the same.

The main DD671 has a dry stack and is wrapped in the psuedo asbestos as FF describes...
