Unfortunately, yes. A slow, one, though. Variable opinions on here as to the frequency, for example 6 in a minute, but the stuffing box should be tight and yet it should not get hot when running. An infrared thermometer is the safest way to check it (spinning shafts!).

With flax or tefflon yes underway , with Duramax or similar NO.

If you want a set and forget stuffing box, replace the packing with Gore GFO packing. After it wears in after a few hours of use it can be tightened to produce no drips and will stay cool. You only have to adjust the packing nut maybe once each year and often never.

Gore GFO packing sounds great. I have through many years of packing pumps, valve stems, etc while on active duty in the Navy used flax, winding spiral ribbon graphite, and teflon but this stuff sounds great, minimal shaft wear and the fibers disipate any heat buildup. How long have you been using it David ? and where can we buy it ?
