"M" ratings

Are "M" ratings an industrial-wide standard or is it just a John Deere "thing"? Believe my JD 4045D has an "M2" rating.

Thanks, CP. That site has more detailed info than JD's website.

As FF says, every manufacturer of repute does the same as JD's M rating. In a boat though, more important than the rating are - (1) propped correctly, (2) decent fuel filtration and (3) good by the book maintenance.
