Ring Gear on Perkins 4-236

Can I replace the ring gear in a Perkins 4-236 by removing the transmission, without moving the engine forward? I have a 1985 Chien Hwa Senator 35 Double Cabin Trawler

I would think, if you have room to withdraw the transmission, then you have room to get the flywheel off, then shrink on a new ring gear.
