muffler or not?

my boat has a cummins 5.9BT.
Wet exhaust.

It has never had a muffler or silencer installed.

The boat is really not crazy loud even while underway, but I wonder if installing a muffler would make a significant difference.

I am thinking of trying an inline Vernatone or perhaps a Dapar (slip inside) type of muffler.

The purpose is to suppress some exhaust noise.

Has anyone moved from muffled wet exhaust to none or none to muffled?

We had the iron water lift mufflers on our boat replaced with custom fiberglass water lift mufflers a number of years ago. The big advantage of fiberglass is that they will pretty much last the life of the boat (so say the diesel shops). If you go with a muffler in a water-cooled exhaust system I think there would be a big advantage to going with fiberglass.

I have heard a few of those vernatone and water lift mufflers. They do quite the exhaust noise. The fiberglass ones help absorb noise in the case so it's even quites the engine room drone. However, they do not help with mechanical noise that diesels are so famous for.I love the sound of a hot rodded 5.9 Cummins but I the mechanical noise that a BT would make in a boat. The turbo 5.9 aren't very loud as far as exhaust noise.Maybe turbo whistle when running up,but that quites down once the cruise rpm are reached. It's late, and I have had a long day.I'll quit rambling now.

A water lift muffler is great at exhaust noise reduction , but the can must be sized to the engine exhaust volume.

On big engines the coolant water volume will usually need a bypass to not insert too much water into the exhaust and raise the back pressure.

Soundown ( 2 inch 2# lead) in the engine room , and absorbing paint will reduce the noise .

Harder is air intake silencing , tho the noise reduction paint can be installed in some intakes.

There is a in line muffler on both the main 671 and the Perkin gen set. Actually the 671 has two mufflers an inline muffler and a modified water lift to cool the exhaust. Out side of the engine room the 671 is quieter than the gen set.

Do you have a brand or size for the inline muffler? I have looked at several but have not made a choice yet.
