If anyone is looking to install a bypass oil filter, I came across this and it is a screaming deal - $140.00 for a new unit that I believe handles up to 300 hp or so. I have one of these, and while I can't prove a negative I assume I am getting much less wear with oil filtered down to 1 micron or so. In any case, this is a very good deal.

You do get less wear. I started using bypass filters in the 1960s with the original toilet paper filter. In a car gas engine the 10¢ roll of toilet paper was changed about every 1000 miles and the oil was never dirty. I used several other filters, but I moved to using a centrifuge about 10 years ago and now my diesel oil stays transparent, passes yearly oil tests and hasn't been changed (in 5 engines) since 2011.
