Perkins T6.354 MM 200 HP CAV injection pump leak

I thought this was going to be an easy fix. I have fuel leaking from the injector pump on my starboard engine. Crawled into the tight place to see where it is coming from. It leaks from a round (about 2" dia. disk that is at the top, front of the pump. I don't know what is is but thought it would be easy to identify from my parts book or shop manual. Not so. The parts book merely points to the injection pump and lists a part number. There is no parts breakdown. I've been told it's a pulsation damper which sounds reasonable, but I don't know for sure. For some reason I was too dumb to write down the engine serial number and pump number before I left. Tomorrow I'll go back. The leak seems to be coming from the disk and from any place else. Any ideas what it is? Perkins marine mechanics are as rare as hens teeth in Iowa but I plan to ask my engineering friend at work who has a couple of Perkins powered Massey combines for and idea or a mechanic reference. It doesn't look like a hard thing to replace but I think it best to ask before attacking it.

Agreed. Any injection shop should be able to handle this.

Has it got the rotary style pump that is mounted in the vertical position? If so I may be able to help by taking a look at my friends perkins, he also has a shop manual.

Yes it is vertical mounted. I looked everywhere except the right place for my camera yesterday. I did get model and serial numbers though I don't have them with me at the moment. The pump is vertically mounted with fuel lines coming out the top. The disk thing that leaks is mounted vertical and is connected to the side of the pump near the top. There are no other connections to it. I will get a picture tonite.

It is a dampener. If it is not leaking at the edge of the "disk" and is leaking where it threads into the governor housing then just unscrew it and replace the seal washer. I think it is a copper crush washer that you can get at almost any good hydraulic supply shop.

You could try tightening it first. Can't hurt unless you strip the threads.

Finally a picture. Thanks, Rivercruiser and Rick. I think I have a plan to try to find parts locally. I get the reccommendation to go to an injection specialist over Perkins. My plan for tomorrow is to search the Ag, Commercial and industrial diesel folks. If they don't do Injection pumps they will know who does.

I think from what I've read about 6.354 fuel systems that is the governor high idle setting 2640 rpm. Your engine should reach that setting in neutral when it's at operating temperature. If there is more than 5% variation when checked with a photo tach it probably should be adjusted if the engine is in proper tune.
