Isuzu 6RB1T
We have an Isuzu 6RB1T diesel in our new to us trawler. It has a partial flow oil filter on the engine. Reading the specs this should be cleaned every 500 hours. Previous owner did not clean it, so it needs to be done. Is this a do it yourselfer job or Do I need to get a mechanic on board for this one? Any info on how to tackle this is welcome.
Also, any info on where to get parts for my Isuzu would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

I would suggest getting "Da Book" the engine maint and rebuild book ( may run $75 to $150) for your specific engine.
Isuzu engines have a great reputation , but are not common as boat engines, so having the "word" from the mfg will save lots of time , and let you what PM is required.
DA Book is not the owners manual, its far more complex.

Kristen yachts were built in Sidney BC. Klassen Diesel in Vancouver marinized Isuzu Diesels. Connecting the dots I’ll bet you have one of those engines. Give them a call. https://klassendiesel.com

It’s on page 6-7 of the first link in FF post #2. Looks easy but there’s no filter element in there. Some kind of centrifugal spinner. I wonder if the PO changed out the main filter regularly.

Regardless, contact Klassen with the specific model and serial number of your engine.
If the P.O. added the spinner after the fact they likely won't know about but if it was done at the time of engine purchase they may be able to help.
But you will have to contact them.

And on page 21 of the same link from FF there is a picture of the centrifugal type oil filter. From this I assume that the maintenance instructions for the centrifugal oil filter will be buried somewhere in the remaining 200 pages, and I also assume that Klassen can help you, as they no doubt supplied it to Kristen with the centrifugal filter fitted by Isuzu[emoji1]

Thanks for the info. Have an email in to Klassen. We did know Vahevala was built in B.C., but didn’t have info on the engine supplier. We do have a copy of “Da Book”, PO set us up well!

Friends have a 36' boat with a Klassen marinized Isuzu about 150HP, now about 6 yrs.
Boat is about 25 yrs.
Don't remember the specific model of their engine but so far it has been a very good engine for them.
If you look after it, it will do well by you.
Enjoy your boat.

Updating….thanks for all the input. We got in touch with Klassen diesel and they confirmed they provided our engine. Tony sent us out new gaskets and spindle for the unit. Old spindle showed no signs of wear, wall of the filter was caked in sludge. Soaked it for about an hour in kerosene. The oil was not gritty. Whole job took about 2 hours. Installed new gaskets and held on to the spindle for future.
Klassen was excellent and will be a great resource in the future.
Interested to see what our next oil analysis shows. We know the filter had not been changed or cleaned in at least 5 years, maybe more.
Thanks again for all the help. TF is a great resource.
