Question Cat 3208 zincs and others?

Hey TF,

I have Cat 3208 T/A. I believe there are 5 zincs on each engine. I have never changed the zincs, but they were replaced when I bought the boat in 2013. Except for the delivery, the boat has lived in fresh water.

In preparing the boat for the cruise north this summer, I have added inspection and/or replacement of the zincs. All my zincs caps appear to be painted red.
  1. How do you change them?
  2. Just unscrew and replace?
  3. Where do I buy them?
  4. Are Canadian zincs better?
  5. I have twin dics trannys. Do they have zincs?
  6. I also have a 8KW Onan, Zincs?
Thanks for your help and advice!

Unscrew the brass cap with the red paint on it with a crescent wrench. When it comes off you will see the brass part and the remnants of the zinc. Unscrew the remains of the zinc and screw a new one on with pliers and the crescent wrench.

Screw the renewed zinc and its brass cap back in and you are done.

Sometimes the cap comes off and there is no zinc. This means it either corroded to nothing or it fell off inside. If it is inside, you can usually leave it and it will slowly corrode to nothingness. But if you get a couple of them in one heat exchanger they can block the raw water flow. In that case you have to remove the end cap on the heat exchanger to remove them.

But if it fell off or corroded away, the zinc stub inside the brass part will be left there usually. You can either drill and get it out with an easy out or the simpler way is just to buy new zincs with the brass cap.

Both zincs with and without the brass cap are available from boatzincs.com.

To be effective marine zincs need a rather pure zinc. Boatzincs sell Camp brand zincs that meet US specs. Don't know anything about Canadian zincs. Maybe Camp are Canadian for all I know.

Your transmission has a lube oil cooler that is part of the main engine's raw water flow and should be one of the 5.

The exchangers on a typical high output turbocharged engine that are protected by zincs are: main heat exchanger (my Yanmar 6LY has three zincs on this one), the transmission oil cooler, the air cooler, the lube oil cooler, and back to the main heat exchanger (in order of flow on my engine).

Zincs come in various diameters and lengths. So find out what yours are first and order what you need from boatzincs.
