My recommendation has always been to use a Y strainer AFTER any rubber impeller pump.

Its SO easy to simply pull the screen and have it ALL !

Its so fast one can pull the screen just to see if the rubber is coming apart in tiny chunks, as part of the PM.

Make sure the strainer leg is below the line pointed down if you want it to catch debris as intended. And buy a spare screen at the same time you buy that strainer in case you damage it cleaning. Nothing is more useless than a Y strainer without a screen in it.

Basket strainers are more $ but even easier to service. Either will work well.

Yes. In my 20 plus years of diesel boating I have never had an impeller break up. Do the maintenance.

I don't think you can put a strainer after the pump on all engines. Changing the impeller on the recommended schedule works for most folks.
