Engine Start/Stop

I have a Lehman 135 engine, Borg-Warner transmission, and Morse controls. Lately, I have had trouble getting the engine to stop (more often) and start (once). It seems like I can't find the right spot in neutral for the stop or start button to work. I have to jiggle the shifter around a bit until I hit the spot where it will stop.

It seems like I need to adjust something, but I'm not sure what. Otherwise, everything seems to be operating just fine.

Sounds like a coincidence. I've never heard of a stop button that required you to be in neutral to stop the engine. Obviously you want to be in neutral when you stop the engine, but if you broke the shifting linkage in gear, you would want to be able to turn off the engine.

If you have a push button to stop setup then it could be the solenoid or its associated wiring is faulty, it could be the push button itself or its associated wiring is faulty. Wiring could be corroded or loose.

I know the older Lehmans had the solenoid, just don't know about your 135.

Use a voltmeter to check voltage at the P.B. and ensure that there is full voltage and no iffy bouncing around. Same for the solenoid.

Also ensure there is a GOOD ground at the solenoid. If not then it cannot work properly.

The solenoids do have a finite life as do P.B. Most likely one or the other.

The Perkins 135 we had on our 1986 Monk 36 had the same problem, it was traced to the solinoid getting weak. Changed it out and that fixed the problem.

The Lehman 135s do use a stop solenoid. If you're having trouble stopping it is either the solenoid, stop button or wiring in between. As far as starting is concerned, there is likely a switch that only allows starting in neutral. That switch is located on the transmission, near the top just opposite the gear shift lever. An adjustment may help but my money would be on the wiring to/from or the switch.

Mike: Check the engine wiring harness plug under your engine instrument panel. I'd pull the plug apart and spray with an electrical contact cleaner. We had an intermittent fault and that was where it was. The start, stop, key, oil pressure, engine temp, etc. all go through that connector.

I too have had similar experience. The electrical connection at my stop solenoid was loose and fixing that corrected it for me. I have always had to be in dead neutral for the stop button to work .

Hi,
In order to avoid to start de engine with the gearbox engaged, there is a lever on the side of the B&W activated by the clutch cable which activates a switch. Check the position with an electric tester.
This should be good only for starting, not for stopping.
