Detroit 6v53 Exhaust Gaskets

I'm having an impossible time sourcing exhaust gaskets for my '84 6V53 Detroits. Had to rebuild the turbos, and the mechanic had to pull the exhaust riser from the manifold in order to remove the turbos. We're all ready to go, with rebuilt turbos and injectors, but simply can't find this one bleedin' gasket.

Nobody seems to know how to proceed, not the mechanic, not any of the parts houses. My question is can I just get a machine shop to custom build all metal gaskets? I think the originals are a composite, with metal over a fibrous gasket.

Anybody have any experience with custom fabricating gaskets?

FelPro has a material for exhaust (metal reinforced) sold in sheets. So you can cut your own. Not easy to cut inside tho. I use a sharp wood chisel and gouge for inside cuts & hole punches for bolt holes. If you work carefully you will end up with a better gasket than you can buy from China.

If these are round all metal gaskets that go between Vclampd pieces, thay are available; you are just not looking hard enough.

Success, maybe. MTU still manufactures the gaskets, and their distributor in Tampa has ordered them. They should be in Monday, I'll run up there with the riser and if they fit we're back on the water next week.

I would look in Boats & Harbors , and call any engine shop near the offshore oil industry on the Gulf coast..

These engines were never very common but try calling a bus guy, LUKE at 888COACH 34 and see what he can get.

Luke is at US Coach in NJ , worth a free call.
