Newbies w lots to learn

Hey there...
I have been browsing the Forums for the last 18 months while my wife and I looked for our first boat. We wanted a change in life so we sold our house and bought a Trawler. We are a family of four w some boating experience but we are definitely Greenbacks! We purchased a 1982 44ft Island Gypsy and so far we love it!
I'm not on social media but figured I should join the forum.
I already have a ton of questions so I'll try to make a few posts and fish for some answers.

Adam

Welcome aboard. This is the place; y'all have hit the jackpot, the ultimate arbiter of all that is correct and proper in a trawler. Any question asked here or even just comments with be dissected and discussed ad nauseum until you have at least ten ridiculous ways to solve any problem and maybe just as many really good ideas. Then you get to choose and tell us which you chose so we can all tell you why that was wrong. Lots of fun here, and never a dull moment.

Welcome. No social media here, either. Long live forums!

(Or is that fora?)

Anyway, you'll have a ton of questions. Start by searching, probably 90% of them have been answered before. And 50% of those have multiple answers.

Welcome to TF.

Don't pay any attention to Menzies and don't ever, ever, ever answer a question about which anchor you use or you'll be in for a loooooong series of answers about which anchor would be better than what you now have.

How about we ask him about his preference for dinghy instead? Or maybe single or twin engines....

Wonder if he has any outside teak, and how he cleats his dock lines?

Welcome aboard, Adam! You'll fit in just fine here.

These guys nailed it. We have no shortage of opinions and endless patience for questions. We've never had a single question go unanswered. We're very proud of that record.

Lots of folks here who REALLY know their business. It's a great combination.

Post some boat pics on your own thread so we can tell you what you need to do. We love spending other folk's money vicariously.

I think you meant "greenhorns," but anyway you'll find "greenbacks" come in quite handy

Love all those plants you have on board. A couple weeks ago I was told to throw mine out since this brings bad luck on a boat (same with bananas, starting a journey on Friday etc.). Mine will stay and the bananas are currently eaten, lol but will soon be replaced with new ones, smile. Maybe it’s more fun to discuss superstitions instead of anchors? Anyhow, I’m a Greenback too and boy do I still have a lot to learn. But I love it (not so sure about the boat cat though, she’s missing the garden I think).

Ok, now I better read up what’s the best way to treat the teak deck.

Screw superstitions! We renamed our boat and never did anything but change the transom. Boat has been an angel ever since.

Maintain her well, maintain yourselves well, and go have fun!

I'm in the Landscaping Biz and love plants so I always have greenery around. I didn't know plants were a superstition though. Bananas....yes and I just bought some more. Also renamed the boat.
Crossing fingers that the Transom is good.

Only plants we ever have on board are herbs! We tend to find that the salty air does for plants very quickly no matter where we try to put them. Not sure what offshore you have done so far, but you may find the same - and make sure to secure those potential flying objects!

One of the best things to learn with a boat that's new to you... the noises. Know which things make which tone of beep, chime, alarm or whatever. Get to know the sounds of the engine/running gear when in use. Listen for any unexpected changes. That way you're not caught unaware when something starts 'making a noise'.
