I know nothing about Trawlers, but boated lots

Hello, my name is Fly, and I live on the south west coast of Canada.
As i look forward to my early retirement , I am wanting to learn about Trawlers. Boated lots from rivers and lakes, to the Pacific Ocean.
Owned many boats, and have several now still.
I'm not sure exactly what I want to retire on, but here to learn.

Together the contributors to this forum comprise a form of "Master Mind" on boating in general. Occasionally some of us are singularly mindless... myself of course included!

Welcome, my first suggestion is not to limit your thinking to what someone called a trawler. Look at many boats in your size price range and see what features fit you.

Welcome. There are lots of choices, but on this forum are people who have probably owned or operated most any boat you are interested in.

My recommendation to almost everyone contemplating a boat purchase it to spend time thinking about and writing down how you intend to use your boat - and include the admiral in the exercise if you have one.

Every boat is a good one for someone - but lots of boats are not so good for many... alot depends on what you want to d with it.

Wifey B: No one here knows anything about Trawlers. :) There was once a member who knew everything there was to know about them, but he's not active now. :rolleyes:
 
Once you have an idea what you want in a boat, you might consider charting several different ones to see what you like.
 
No, no, no, no Fly. You're doing this all wrong. You're supposed to come in here and say you know everything there is to know about trawlers, which anchor is best, running your Honda generator on the back deck. Then you'll be just like the rest of us on here.


Just kidding, of course. Welcome to TF. There are a LOT of people on here who have a lot of knowledge, me not included in that group. It's a great place to hang out.

Thanks for the warm welcome ladies and gentlemen.
I have owned many boats, been on many more.
But am fairly experienced albeit far from an expert more on aluminum boats capable of planing speeds.
I have been going south down the coast of North America and spend a bit beyond to Central America the past 9 winters....spending the bulk of the time around mexico and the sea of cortez.
Leaving out my little inflatable i use for remote lake or toss in the back of the helicopter to go places.
I also run boats that were mostly fiberglass I/O or outboards for many many years to cruise, fish, ski behind....my current lake boat at rhe cabin is a 28 foot regal with 430 hp mercruiser.
I extensively run rivers in aluminum jet boats and yes its a rush tearing up rapids, jumping logs and sliding over gravel and sand bars.
I have had many jetboats and have 2 now....a 21 foot with 425 hp and Hamilton 212 pump, and my go fast 17 foot with a guesstimate (not sure) 625 to 650 hp and Hamilton 212 as well.
My ocean boats have mostly been aluminum with a few fiberglass thrown in over the years... but i have a love of aluminum boats i admit....currently running a 2014 Kingfisher 3325 Destination with twin 300 yamahas, and 25 high thrust yamaha.
Spend 4 plus months a winter living on the Kingfisher now the past 2 winters.
I go into relax mode, and 80 percent of the time cruise on the 25 or just 1 big 300 with it idled back.
I'm slowly selling off more and more businesses the past several years.
The plan is to sell the house and the Kingfisher boat and build a small seaside house on the lot I purchased.
Spend a little time but not much in BC waters.
Mostly travel.
I love aluminum but not sure its the best for bigger boats.
I want space and comfort for the girlfriend and I.
Occasionally my grown daughter to.
And sometimes my best friend and her husband or my Dad will come visit for a few weeks.
I want outdoors deck space as well as inside comfort.
Ideally 2 decks 1 covered and 1 open.
A large master and 2 smaller guest stae rooms.
Would love a single diesel but may have to go with twins.
I want bow and stern thrusters both.
Thinking 60 to 70 feet...but can do a bit more or less.
Water maker oh ya.
Good fridge and freezer room.
New, or used if not too old or totally recently rebuilt....no headaches like corrosion issues etc.
Happy to cruise at good fuel range speeds of 7 or 8 knots, but 9 is nice to if going 2500 nm legs.
Good anchor system to drop it in deep waters and not drift or skip.
My home anchor will even be in about 160 to 170 feet of water usually.
Not concerned about shower power and such much as it won't be a marina boat. Throw on a couple sea kayaks for paddling around to, and a couple mountain bikes for peddling around towns.
Plan to very slowly putter around the world, around the tip of south America is i can and head north all the way up the east side to Europeand around. When i leave in a few years and have some good shake down trip on whatever i buy i plan to spend 5 to 7 years seeing the world.
Will leave it somewhere twice a year for a big service and fly home to BC and back and continue.
Good generators and batteries to live aboard for extended times.
Not so worried about speed but the range to go 3000 nm min even against the winds, and able to handle some rough water so if i am half way from BC to Hawaii and nearest land is 1300 nm away we don't die.
I would aim for good weather windows but no one can predict for weeks like my crossing would be.
A basic autopilot.
A big and relatively fast tender that i can get up and down easily.
I like to fish so may fish off the tender some or use it for runs to towns or explore....so thinking maybe a 14 foot or more capable of running at 30 knots to go places. Maybe a small world cat or possibly a hard bottom inflatable with gas outboard.
Basic electronics by todays standards as i don't use higher tech stuff to well.
A couple televisions and wifii for the laptop as GF uses a laptop for her remote work she does....yes she is younger than me and not ready to retire yet.
Me....i am 45 and raised my now 22 year old daughter alone since age 6 when her mother and little sister were killed by a drunk driver.
My name is Fly and most people ask me how to spell it and I am not sure why.
I plan to sell all but 2 business in the next 2 years and then my managers and daughter will run them for me.....i will be so glad to have less employees and stress.

From another BC boy. (I grew up in the Kootenays but have migrated south)

Sounds like you've got some great adventures planned out. I'm sure you'll come up with a great boat to haul your butt around. It may not give the the same adrenaline rush as a 600+ hp jet boat but you get to see a lot more when travelling at under 10 knots.

Enjoy the process of determining what will be perfect for you.

Fiberglass, steel, or aluminum?
Do i have to run twin diesels in the 60 to 70 foot range?
Preferably a top quality single is my dream boat as I am not going for big speeds.
Best engines are what a Cat or yanmar or????
Top quality boats are who? Reliable is key from systems to wiring, to switches and hull as well as just fancy cabinet doors and wood.
Selene, Kadeey, or one of the many many others...i have no preference at this time.
Walk around or full width cabin?
Side doors and how many are best?
Electronics....what do i really need anyways?
What water makers and freezers and generators and batteries and.....?
Can i fish a litte off it if it has a friend or my GT captaining it? Yes i get that trolling and netting are not going to be super easy off it....but dang i want to fish some to and not just from the tender if any possible way?
Heating and cooling?
Legal issues to roam the many oceans and seas? Jail doesn't sound like fun!

I was in Nelson just last month and been around the kootenays many times.
Tofino on Vancouver island is home now.
But lived in many BC cities and towns.

Is that Fly as in Marty Fly, of "Back to the future", or Fly somebody..? Just curious.
Also, before you become a bone fide member it is necessary to pass a sort of test, by answering a question only a genius would know, sorry...:D...( I just made that up, but it had you shunting for a second there didn't it..?)

My mind has lots of room for new ideas, I have not worked it very hard the last 45 years ☺
 
Fly because I grew up in an aviation family and my parents wanted me to have an odd name I guess.
They were fixed wing pilots.
I started off in fixed wing but become hooked on rotary wing at age 19 and flown helicopters far more than planes the last 25 years.

Oh and to answer your question...Bill Hamilton from New Zealand ☺
