Hello everyone. I am about to decide on buying a 38 ft.' marine trawler built in 1979. The teak decks, of course, are shot. Is there a way for the surveyor to tell how much damage there is to the plywood subdeck? I have an estimate to allgrip the deck, but I don't think that would include any reconstruction of the subdeck. I'm sure there has to be some rot down there after so many years, but I'm not familiar with these trawlers. I've always been a sailboat person and have sailed quite a bit offshore. Since I live in the Ft. Lauderdale area, I would like to venture at least over to the Bahamas. Is this something that would be acceptable to a trawler of this type? Thank you before hand on any advice you could give me, I'm going to do a personal inspection of the boat on Tuesday.

I was in your same situation and found that the only true way to see the extent of the damage (if any, but likely) is to take up a section of teak and check. Get a multi-tool and cut it out, and if you can scratch out the wood with your finger, you know it's big $$$$. Good luck.
