I read in a book I recently purchased at a used book store that there is a difference between a "Privateer" and a "Letter of Marque."

I've real a LOT of Patrick O'Brien and I never picked up on this difference.

Does anyone want to venture a guess?

one's activity is ignored and the others is endorsed?

Nope, and I'm surprised you're the only one to take a shot.

According to the author, a Privateer is a private, purpose built warship authorized by the Gov't for commerce raiding. A Letter of Marque is an armed merchantman authorized for commerce raiding.

He said it is a subtle difference and one that has often led to confusion for historians doing research. I never heard this before, but it sounds believable and in any case is good trivia.
