Just ordered the book Marin recommended, The Boys In the Boat. Here's one I just finished, In The Kingdom Of Ice: The Grand & Terrible Voyage of the USS Jeanette, by Hampton Sides.
It covers the USS Jeanette's attempt to get to the North Pole in 1879. The descriptions of the journey are incredible, the things that were believed about the North Pole and how to get there were unbelievable but so interesting. The description of the 1876 Centennial in Philadelphia made me wonder when and where our country gave up on being the best at just about everything.

Doh. Just had that one in my hand at the airport today. Maybe on the way back.

Another older version of the story is Hell on Ice. The engineer survivor went on to design and build the great white fleet. Amazing ordeal.

I just finished readin In the Kingdom of Ice. I give it 5 stars. What a story!
