Road Rally

Some photos from a road rally in south-central France I had the opportunity to participate in a few weeks ago. The car is our friend's 1933 Singer Le Mans. The windscreen is missing as its glass was cracked shortly before the trip. The two POV shots were my view of the run.

Fantastic experience zipping along the country roads in rural France.

Greetings,
Mr. Marin. NICE. And the limitations as to age and "style" of vehicle? Classic? Antique? Historic?

Cool! I haven't been in a rally since the 70's. Was driving a Triumph GT6+ at the time.

Nice. Thanks Marin. My last (fun, small, local) rally was in 2007. Won it.

As you were in that part of the world did you manage to get down to see the Schlumpf Collection in Mullhouse, in the Alsace.

Absolutely amazing, 400 cars all in working order dating back to about 1890, the largest Bugatti collection in the world.Very few British or American cars, it's a history of European marque's of the 20th Century. If you like cars it's a must see. How it came to be is also an amazing story, so French.

The category my friend's Singer is in is called "Vintage." Vintage means pre-WWII, which in Europe is 1939 or older. However, these events often include other categories, too, so there were cars like older Ferraris, Jaguars, MGs, Fiats, Citroens, Bugattis, Panhards, Peugots, and so forth, including a few "exotics." My friend's Singer was the second-oldest car in the run.

I learned somthing new at this rally, and that is that in Europe/UK at least, there are two basic categories of collector car conditions. One is "Fully Restored," which means exactly what it says. The other, and far more interesting category, is called (officially) "Oily Rag." Oily Rag means, in essence, "daily driver." It's not perfect, there can be scratches and dings and worn upholstery and tarnished chrome. It's a term you'll see even in the ads in the collector car magazines to describe the basic condition of a car.

The nice thing about the Oily Rag category is that it brings a lot of very cool cars to events like this, cars that otherwise would not be brought out because they are not fully restored.
