Greetings,
Mr. BL. Thanks a bunch for that link. VERY interesting and demonstrates the large role the French had in the War of Independence. Ironic, in that the French were broadly condemned and ridiculed (frogs and surrender monkeys are two terms I distinctly remember being used on this site-TF) when they refused to join the "Coalition of the willing" in 2003 (GW Bush). Remember "Freedom fries" and banning all French goods (suggested).
In response to a couple of especially vitriolic rants against the French, again on this site by several of the "usual" suspects, I was sorely tempted to suggest the US return the Statue of Liberty.

The French attempted to copy our revolution ,sadly, after chopping thousands of heads in a terror campaign, they ended up with a dictator / emperor with in 20 years.

You're very welcome!

My knowledge of Revolutionary War history is embarrassingly weak. However, what I have been coming to discover is that without the massive assistance of the French, both in material and their seemingly perpetual conflicts with the English, we had absolutely no chance whatsoever of gaining independence. It seems that the French didn't just assist, they made it possible.

There is no question that the French blockading the British fleet aided in winning the Reolutionary War. However, the French did it more to hurt Britain, a common enemy, that to aid the US. They realized that the American colonies could grow into a strong ally adding to British power.

The French and Spainish had been trying to defeat Britain forever. The fact that the British fleet was split protecting the Home Land was to our advantage. The French wanted to keep that split.
