I had no idea. And the CG yard where she's gone through refit is just a few miles from here. I cruise right past on the water to my favorite waterfront dive.

Neat story!
I dove a number of times on the USS Schurz formerly the German cruiser SMS Geier. She was laid up in Hawaii for repairs when the USA entered WWI. So the USA seized her, renamed her, and put her in the USN. She was sunk in a collision off of Morehead City, NC. Makes you wonder how many other enemy ships ended up in the USN.
