Even the California Highway Patrol has a boat...

...and they also have the ability to run it aground! I captured this photo last Tuesday near Port Chicago Navel Weapons Depot in California's Suisun Bay. The tide was ebbing so they were there for quite a while. The channel is narrow through that area of Suisun Bay. The US Coast Guard keeps a 1,500 foot safety zone around the wharf when loading munitions (the ship Black Hawk was being loaded at the time). A secondary channel is set up for pleasure boats to pass. That channel is even narrower. The depth at MLLW in the channel is about eight feet. About 20 feet North of the channel the depth is about one foot to exposed. The area is locally known as "middle ground". I am guessing our CHP vessel knows about "middle ground" now...

The absence of yellow (white?) lane markers probably confused them?
