As a consumer, we can do our bit to avoid as much plastic as possible. My wife really abhors plastic packaging and refuses to buy anything unnecessarily wrapped in plastic.
She brings her own shopping bags for groceries (as most Australians do) and buys bulk products using her own containers wherever possible. I get my butt kicked if I come home with anything wrapped in plastic.
Actually, it’s not that hard to avoid it much of the time. Do we really need to put a bunch of bananas in a separate plastic bag so they don’t touch the cauliflower in another plastic bag?

You're right, I try not to buy cauliflower :D

I’m funny about it, too. The way I see it, I cause about a hundreth of the climate damage Leonardo DiCaprio does with his lifestyle.

When he gets worried enough to reduce his pollution to my levels, then I’ll start to think he really believes what he is saying.

But, based on his standard, I’m golden.

Hi, Not just speeches, even acts ...

Leonardo DiCaprio Has Quietly Donated $100 Million To Fight Climate Change:thumb:

When Leonardo and his fellow elites start flyin' commercial instead of private I'll become a believer.

The plastic disposable bag should be easily replaced with a recyclable paper bag, maybe coated to be rain safe. As with most things, environmentally friendly is often less convenient and more expensive.

Expense is the key , the old plastic has no value , so it is discarded by the lowest cost method.

Unkle Stoopid gives away big bucks for battery cars , windmills ,home insulation and geothermal heating which helps single individuals more than society in general..

The public at large would be helped buy Unkle demanding new power plants to burn plastic waste as they switch to the new cheap gas provided by fracking. ,,,Rich or poor , plastic is here to stay.

It takes a high temperature to destroy the plastic as they make electric , but as there is no getting away from plastic , why not get some value from its collection and destruction?

Why can’t we get away from plastic? Or at least cut back dramatically. It would be quite simple. Just tax the hell out of it.
I know....... everyone says no more taxes, but it is a great way to cut back on use of a non essential product. I don’t get why people accept a tax on they’re hard earned pay, but complain about taxes on things that are bad for us or society in general.

Taxing money away from folks just destroys the value of the money , it can not be used or create a demand for new products or services, so the economy will not grow.

By giving value to what is now trash there is growth as a new industry , collecting plastic to SELL, is created..

You don’t need to tax plastic bags, place a deposit on them, similar to aluminum cans in some areas. You change .25 per sack and you get .25 per bag when you return them, clean and reuse

Fine to see a few of you from many different countries that are smart enough to see this international problem. It is a pity many believers have their own truth or the word of authority that is like God would speak to us. Any of us here at the Trawler forum may choose to make a major act of lowering CO emissions to slash even at 0.5 kn at a lower rate in 2019, is it caught more than you are willing to work ???

That would be like telling you to sell you boat and take a ferry or ocean liner.

And the pollution per pax mile isn't much different in the plane.

Once again, fewer people. Unchecked population growth will be dealt with, but in some very painful ways.

Until then we can cut pollution by 2% per year (Yeah) and increase population by 3% per year (Nay) and spin our wheels deeper into the mud.

Spanish flu...100 years ago...500 million died worldwide...1/3 of the Earths total human population.

Much has been learned since then, but a nasty flu could still put a dent in our numbers.

Nature will find a way...

https://www.cdc.gov/features/1918-flu-pandemic/index.html

Given the higher human density levels in urban areas, the exponential greater regional mobility and airplane travel eliminating the oceans as a natural barrier, the spread speed of the next pandemic may well offset the gains of modern medicine.

That was the projected infection rate, the mortality rate was about 5-10% of the infection rate.
It`s not called "Malthus`s Gloomy Theory" for nothing.

Duly noted, thanks :thumb:

It is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus, and the number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide...

So with a current population of 7.7 billion, there would be about 250 million dead in a similar scenario. Much has been learned in the past 100 years, so that should keep the death toll down during a similar pandemic, but then again, the viruses are learning (becoming resistant to medications) as well.

Yet, still, he refuses to alter his own behavior. What are we to make of that other than he really isn’t as concerned as someone who does?

Or, did he just buy the right to pollute?

So, how much did you contribute.... and you still have your boat?

"Or, did he just buy the right to pollute?"

Pollution is a very different concept compared to global warming.

Dump garbage in the water its pollution .

Create CO 2 and you have made plant food.

Big difference.

Nothing, and yes, I have my boat, because I’m not hand wringing over this.

I’m an agnostic (denier/heretic/heathen/take your pick) in the Church of Man Made Global Warming.

The hypocracy of so many MMGW believers, for me, is just a little more than hard to take.

Imagine, for instance, saying you were against child pornography, but also saying that while you intended to keep buying it, and looking at it, that you were nevertheless donatng money to try and stomp it out (and, I have no doubt that we have some Hollywooders doing that, too) You would rightly not be taken seriously. You would certainly not be lauded as a savior. So, is MMGW a more, or less, serious problem than child pornography?

You may disagree with me, (and, I am 100 per cent sure that you will) but I promiise you that this is the major “believer” credibility problem, with the unwashed such as myself.

Group9,

I TOTALLY agree with you. Where do I sign up for your Church. While I have all the intensions of being a good neighbor and not over polluting, I do my share and am not going to apologize for that. I'll keep my boat, car and engines that burn gas, and I significantly support the oil industry.

I have a BIG issue when the rights of sea grass, mangroves and manatees are greater than the human. And, I'm proud to be a member of this race.

Yes & no.

Some pollution has nothing to do with global warming, however some bi products of global warming also cause pollution, and some on a large scale. This is especially true of the acidification of the world's oceans.

In 2011 (or there about) the earth reached a population of 7 billion people. In 2024 (or there about) the earth will have added another billion people (3 times the current population of the USA) in just 13 years. It took from the beginning of the human race till 1804 to reach a population of 1 billion. 123 years later (1927), the population grew to 2 billion. Now the world adds a billion people in 13 years, and you're worried about the sea level rising and the earth's temperature fluctuating?

Think globally and act locally.

We had one child and were foster parents.
