For those of you who have vacationed or sailed in St. Lucia, or who have seen one of the Pirates of the Caribbean (aka Black Pearl) you may be interested in the report that the Brig Unicorn sank today on it first voyage outside of Rodney Bay since its refit.
My information is second hand although believed accurate. The Unicorn has been undergoing refit over the last few years. The refit was mostly cosmetic aimed at a party charter crowd at the dock or within the confines of Rodney Bay (several square miles). The St. Lucia Coast Guard would not certify it to carry passengers outside of Rodney Bay. My wife and I have been on several parties on the Unicorn last season while she was tied to the dock.
On a trip to St. Vincent (40 to 50 miles) Unicorn began taking on water and sank in minutes. The crew was rescued from a pirogue (open 20+ feet fishing boat). The Brig Unicorn was going to St. Vincent to be hauled out for repairs.
