Fuel Consumption Cummins QSB 5.9

After a lovely 18 months in North Queensland we are on our way back south.

Our trip so far has involved a few delays due to the unsettled weather starting with a 6 day delay at Shaw Island!

Our fuel consumption has been slightly higher on the way south due mostly to running at planing speeds to reduce transit time in rough water. We prefer calm conditions!!

We are currently sitting in Mooloolaba and the trip to-date has taken 18 days to cover 539 miles using 1678 liters of diesel ( plus genset use). That’s 3.1 liters per nautical mile compared to 2.3 on the way up the coast.

We filled at Abell Point ($1.40 per liter) and again at Bundaberg ($1.17 per liter)

We hope to get to Sydney over summer then after what will be three years of cruising it will be time to move back on land!!

The price of a leadfoot/heavy hand! Still, 3.1 isn't all that bad and great to have options.

I love my QSB's, I can go slow and save $ or speed up to make happy hour but have to pay the price!

Someone has to spend money on the fuel.
My trip home was a little bit better on fuel. Departed Mackay , went out to the reef then down to Urangan, spent some time in Hervey Bay carvorting with the Humpbacks and then proceeded south to Scarborough Marina where I will spend the summer.
Burnt 1514 lts of fuel, 144 lts in the gen set so 1370 in the Gardner for steaming time of 121.5 hrs. 11.27 lts/hr. The last 12 hours with a strong North wind on the quarter I was doing 800RPM/6 knots at 5 lt/hr. Have not checked the miles I covered but just the engine hours.
Still got 1300 lts of fuel on board for summer hijinks in the Bay.

A mate of mine had a similar sized ex cray boat to Tidahpapah and often claimed similar economy at lower RPM.
I never went into the ER as it was tight, dark and smelly and I assumed it was a 6lxb Gardner as Gardners are often touted for their legendary economy but when he came onboard ours last week and went into the ER he went all weak at the knees at the sight of our NTA855 Cummins.

It was then he told me he had the same engine , without the turbo, in his cray boat.

Dark and smelly?? Surely that’s a Gardner engine room not a sterile clean Cummins environment [emoji4]
