Standard Horizon - Bad News/Good News

Bought a new Standard Horizon VHF and Remote Station Mike. Went to install it over the weekend and found that the face plate for the remote mike was missing (needed for mounting). That's the frustrating bad news. The good news is that I called their customer service line, talked to a human who found the needed part and is mailing it to me.

It would have been nice not to have the problem in the first place, but at least they were sincere and efficient in solving it.

I just bought a SH VHF radio with AIS. It's still in the box and should get it installed next week. It looks like all the parts are there.

I called SH tech support to get advise on interfacing the VHF with my existing Garmin GPS. The tech guy walked me though the whole process to the point of telling me to connect the green wire of the GPS to the brown wire on the radio. He had the Garmin GPS manual in front of him when he was explaining all this to me. That is exceptional customer service.

dvd, Where did you buy the radio? If you purchased it from Worst Marine, many times I find parts missing because they take the stuff back on return and put it back on the shelf without checking after someone didn't return all of the parts. Anyone should beware of buying anything from them if the box is not still factory sealed. Chuck

True, but it also could have been missing from the factory. Trust me, I work in manufacturing and our company sends assemblies missing parts from time to time. Anything "hand packaged" or "hand assembled" is subject to human error.

Bought it from Defender -- packaging didn't appear to have been opened, so I'd guess it was a manufacturer's omission.

I have a couple of Standard Horizon VHF radios and a SH chart plotter. Great products. Great value. Never needed the great 3 year warranty. Have contacted Tech Support a few times regarding set-up etc. Always knowledgeable and very helpful. Strong recommendation.
