Some manufacturers have run into trouble complying with now-applicable FCC DSC requirements. As I recall, it has something to do with interpretation of an ambiguous rule. Perhaps that is why Furuno doesn't sell some of its VHFs in the US.

ICOM
I'm likely to use the Icom.
It's just that after all of these years I'd like to try something else. I was hoping to learn more about the Simrad but there isn't much out there. For that matter, there isn't much out there about this particular Icom but I'm going on the assumption that it is more of the same.
It does use their new easier to understand software design, something that I haven't seen yet. Maybe that will make it feel like something different!

Someone hinted at it earlier, but currently sales have been halted on several (maybe all) of the ICOM DSC radios. Icom misinterpreted one or two aspects of how some of the DSC features are supposed to work, and the FCC called them on it. They agrees to halt sales until they fix it. If you hunt around, you will probably find the M506 out of stock everywhere. And know that if you buy one you will have to get it updated, and that involves removing it and sending it back to Icom or to a dealer.

Icom obviously has a big incentive to fix this quickly, so I expect they will be back on the market in short order. Unless you need a VHF TODAY, I think you will be just fine waiting and getting one when you actually need it.

I do have to say I was very happy with our heavily used (by us) Standard Horizon units, and their after the sale support was excellent, on par with that of Furuno. Based on that experience with their support, I would buy either brand again as first choice.

Do you know if Standard Horizon has noise cancellation like the better Icom have? I'm in the market for a small, fixed VHF for our tender, and thought I might try a SH.

Not sure what their current line up has. You could look through it and give them a call.

I found this on another forum.
You might be able to get that information from the original poster.
Let me know what you learn?

The advantage to Furuno is they are mostly for the bigger boats and commercial craft.

Where the "latest and greatest" is not the selling point, reliable is key.
